Mets' Jacob deGrom (4IP 0R) tops players for Friday, April 3's spring games

Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom is Friday’s spring training Player of the Day.

DeGrom pitched four scoreless innings, allowed one hit and struck out four in the 5-0 win over the Rangers.

DeGrom had a Box-Toppers game score of +7.0, tied with Reds pitcher Jason Marquis, who was Player of the Game in the 2-0 win over the Blue Jays. But deGrom won the tiebreaker for Player of the Day because he earned the win in his game, while Marquis had a no-decision.

Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez is American League Player of the Day. Volquez pitched four scoreless innings and struck out seven in the 11-1 win over the Astros.

Scooter Gennett of the Brewers is NL Batter of the Day. Gennett doubled, went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs in the 6-3 win over the Indians.

Brandon Guyer of the Rays is AL Batter of the Day. Guyer hit a grand slam in the 11-5 win over the Tigers.

Box-Toppers points aren’t awarded for spring training games, but if this were the regular season, deGrom would earn 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Volquez would earn 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day. Gennett and Guyer would each earn 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Friday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) would earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

Sixteen spring training games were scheduled Friday. Three games which included non-Major League teams (Marlins-Greensboro, White Sox-Charlotte and Cardinals-Memphis) are not included in Box-Toppers results.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers Daily Scorecard graphic.png

White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy is Wednesday's Player of the Day. Peavy gave up three hits and one run over 6 2/3 innings in the 6-3 win over the Mets.

Jason Marquis of the Padres is National League Player of the Day. Marquis pitched eight shutout innings in the 1-0 win over the Marlins.

Paul Goldschmidt of the Diamondbacks is National League Batter of the Day. Goldschmidt hit two homers and drove in three runs in the 3-2 win over the Dodgers.

Note: Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez and Indians pitcher Justin Masterson were both named Players of the Game in their team's victories Wednesday and earned 1.0 Box-Toppers points. Both players now have 5.7 Box-Toppers points for the season. Hernandez now ranks sixth among all players for 2013 and Masterson ranks eighth.

Peavy receives 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Day. Marquis receives 1.7 for NL Player of the Day. Johnson and Goldschmidt receive 1.5 each for being top Batter of the Day in their league.

All of Wednesday's other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) receive 1.0 Box-Toppers point:

Holland, Marquis top players for Tuesday, April 16

Rangers pitcher Derek Holland, who threw seven shutout innings in the 4-2 win over the Cubs, is Tuesday's Player of the Day.

Padres pitcher Jason Marquis, who gave up one run over 7 2/3 innings in the 9-2 win over the Dodgers, is National League Player of the Day.

Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers, who went 3-for-5 with a homer and 4 RBIs in the 6-2 win over the Mariners, is AL Batter of the Day.

Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies, who went 3-for-4 in the 9-8 win over the Mets in 10 innings in the second game of a doubleheader, is NL Batter of the Day.

One game, the Phillies at the Reds was suspended in a 0-0 tie in the ninth inning because of heavy rain. It is set to resume Wednesday. Currently, Reds pitcher Homer Bailey has the highest Box-Toppers score of any player in the game—he pitched eight innings, gave up two hits, no runs, no walks and struck out 10. That would give him a Box-Toppers score of 16 and would likely make him Player of Game—if the Reds win. If the game is indeed concluded Wednesday, whoever is named Player of the Game will be included in Wednesday's Box-Toppers results. And if the Reds win, it seems likely Bailey, with his high Box-Toppers score, may be Wednesday's Player of the Day, even though he did all his pitching on Tuesday.

Holland receives 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Day. Marquis receives 1.7 for NL Player of the Day. Cabrera receives 1.5 points for AL Batter of the Day. Gonzalez receives 1.5 points for NL Batter of the Day.

All of Tuesday's other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) receive one Box-Toppers point:
