About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Wheeler earned 36.1 Box-Toppers points over 2023 and 2024. He ranked 11th among all players in 2023 with 14.7 Box-Toppers points and first among all players in 2024 with 21.4 points. Wheeler ranked fifth among National League pitchers in 2023 and led NL pitchers in 2024.
All Box-Toppers points leaders over 2023-24 are also leaders in points for the past season, 2024.
Skubal leads AL pitchers over past two seasons
Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal led American League pitchers over the past two seasons with 31.8 Box-Toppers points, second overall. Skubal had 10.7 points in 2023, 40th overall and 19th among American League pitchers. He had 21.1 Box-Toppers points in 2024, second overall and first among AL pitchers.
Blue Jays pitcher Chris Bassitt, who led AL pitchers in 2023 with 20.1 Box-Toppers points, ranks fifth among AL pitchers over 2023-24 with 27.8 points after earning 7.7 points in 2024, 38th among AL pitchers.
Judge leads AL batters
Aaron Judge of the Yankees leads AL batters over the past two seasons with 25.0 Box-Toppers points, 21st overall. Judge earned 12.0 Box-Toppers points in 2023, third among AL batters and earned 13.0 points in 2024, first among AL batters.
Ohtani leads NL batters
Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers leads NL batters over the past two seasons with 30.4 Box-Toppers points, sixth overall. Ohtani earned 19.4 Box-Toppers points in 2023 with the Angels, which was third overall, second among AL pitchers and first among AL batters. He earned 11.0 points in 2024 with the Dodgers, first among NL batters.
While Ohtani has the most overwhelming lead among two-season category leaders with nearly double the points of second-place NL batter Willy Adames of the Brewers (17.2), his total is boosted from his pitching total in 2023. Ohtani earned 9.7 of his 19.4 points in 2023 with the Angels as a pitcher, qualifying to have his combined pitching and batting total rank among both pitchers and batters in Box-Toppers rankings. Still, without those 9.7 points earned as a pitcher in 2023, he would have 20.7 points as a batter over 2023-24, still first among NL batters over that span.
Ohtani did not qualify to rank among pitchers in 2024 because all of his Player of the Game honors during the season were earned as a batter. Ohtani underwent elbow surgery at the end of 2023 and was unable to pitch during 2024 while recovering, though he is expected to take the mound again with the Dodgers in 2025.
This is the third straight season Ohtani has led a two-year Box-Toppers point category. Ohtani led all players with 40.8 points over 2021-22, also leading AL pitchers that season. (He did not qualify to rank as a batter because he earned fewer than 25 percent of his Player of the Game honors as a batter in 2022.)
In 2023, Ohtani again led all players with 44.1 points over 2022-23 and also led AL pitchers and AL batters. He qualified to rank as a batter in 2023 because he earned more than 25 percent of his Player of the Game honors as a batter, in fact earning eight of 16 honors as a batter, 50 percent.
Ohtani signed a free agent deal to join the Dodgers in 2024, moving to the National League.
Pete Alonso of the Mets, who led NL batters in 2023 with 12.0 Box-Toppers points, ranks third among NL batters over 2023-24 with 17.0 points after earning 5.0 points in 2024, 25th among NL batters. Alonso led batters in two-year Box-Toppers point totals for the previous two seasons. In 2022, he had 17.9 points over 2021-22 and in 2023, he had 26.9 points over 2022-23.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
