Ivan Brethowr of the Cubs is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Thursday’s first spring training game of 2025.

Brethowr hit a three-run, pinch-hit home run in the 12-4 win over the Dodgers. Brethowr went 1-for-1, scoring once and driving in three runs.

Brethowr would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game—1.0 for being Player of the Game and 1.0 bonus point for being overall Player of the Day. (There was only one game played Thursday.) However, because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.

Brethowr had a +4.0 Box-Toppers game score, highest among Cubs players Thursday, to win Player of the Game honors.

Brethowr has no career Box-Toppers points. In fact, Thursday was his first Major League game of any kind. He was drafted by the Cubs in the seventh round of the June 2024 Major League amateur draft and played 23 games for the Cubs’ minor league Class A team in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Scoring

No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Brethowr would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
