Player of the Day—Price struck out 10 over six scoreless innings, allowing five hits and no walks, in the 5-0 win over the Orioles.
Price earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 10.4 for the season. He ranks 21st among all players and 14th among AL pitchers.
This is Price’s seventh season with 10 or more Box-Toppers points. His best season was 2015 with the Tigers and the Blue Jays when he had 21.1 Box-Toppers points, fifth among all players and second among AL pitchers. In 2017, he had 4.7 points with the Red Sox.
Price now has 121.3 career Box-Toppers points, 41st among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He trails 40th-ranked player Gary Sheffield (124.1). (It should be noted Sheffield would have an estimated 155 points if his entire career from 1988 were tracked.)
National League Player of the Day—Ryan Zimmerman of the Nationals hit two home runs and went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in six runs, in the 9-4 win over the Cubs.
American League Batter of the Day—J.D. Martinez of the Red Sox hit two home runs, including an eighth-inning, tiebreaking, two-run shot, in the 6-4 win over the Orioles, in the second game of a doubleheader. Martinez went 2-for-2, scoring twice and driving in three runs.
Martinez earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day, giving him 11.5 points for the season, extending his lead among AL batters over second-place Francisco Lindor of the Indians (7.9). Martinez ranks 17th among all players in season rankings.
National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Saturday because the overall NL Player of the Day is batter Ryan Zimmerman.
Rankings—Two players rose into Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 Saturday after earning Player of the Game honors:
Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola (6IP 4H 0R 3BB 5K W in the 5-1 win over the Padres) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 15.4 for the season, rising to sixth place, second among NL pitchers, behind overall leader Max Scherzer of the Nationals (20.1). Nola becomes the seventh player to reach 15 Box-Toppers points this season. It is his second season with 15 points—he had 15.8 in 2017 with the Phillies, sixth among NL pitchers.
Indians pitcher Trevor Bauer (6.1IP 2H R 0BB 8K W in the 3-1 win over the White Sox) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 14.1 for the season, rising to ninth place, seventh place among AL pitchers.
Notable—Mariners closing pitcher Edwin Diaz earns Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the second straight day Saturday.
Diaz (1IP 0R 0R 0BB 2K Sv in the 3-2 win over the Astros) was also Player of the Game Friday in the Mariners’ 5-2 win over the Astros. Diaz has 7.0 Box-Toppers points on the season and rises to first place among AL closers, moving ahead of Brad Hand of the Indians. Hand also has 7.0 points on the season, but Diaz ranks ahead because he has more 2017 points—9.0 vs. 4.7.
Scoring—Price earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Zimmerman earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Martinez earn 1.5 points for being AL Batter of the Day. All of Saturday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
