Marlins pitcher Henderson Alvarez, pitching a no-hitter, is Sunday's Player of the Day on the final day of the regular season.
Alvarez gave up no hits and no runs, walked one, hit one batter and struck out four in the 1-0 win over the Tigers. However, Alvarez had to wait until the bottom of the ninth for the Marlins to score their lone run to win the game. He was in the on-deck circle with the bases loaded and two outs when Giancarlo Stanton scored on a wild pitch.
Indians pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez is American League Player of the Day. Jimenez struck out 13 over 6 2/3 innings in the 5-1 win over the Twins, which sealed a wild card playoff spot for the Indians. Jimenez earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 14.5 for the season, putting him in 21st place in player rankings.
Gerald Laird of the Braves is National League Batter of the Day. Laird went 4-for-4 in the 12-5 win over the Phillies.
Salvador Perez of the Royals is AL Batter of the Day. Perez homered, drove in two runs and went 3-for-4 in the 4-1 win over the White Sox.
Notable: Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish rises to 15th place in Box-Toppers Player Rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday. Darvish (5.2IP 8K ND in 6-2 win vs. Angels) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 16.0 for the season.
Coming Monday: The Tampa Bay Rays visit the Texas Rangers to decide the AL's second wild card team. However, in the meantime, Box-Toppers Final Reports (Well, Nearly Final Except For That One Last Game) on team and player standings will be tabulated and posted Monday.
