Giants' Ryan Vogelsong (6.2IP 7K) tops players for Saturday, May 24

Giants pitcher Ryan Vogelsong is Saturday’s Player of the Day. Vogelsong pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out seven in the 2-1 win over the Twins.

Indians pitcher Corey Kluber is American League Player of the Day. Kluber pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out nine in the 9-0 win over the Orioles. Kluber earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 5.7 for the season. He is now 14th among all players in Box-Toppers player rankings and fifth among AL pitchers.

Rougned Odor of the Rangers is AL Batter of the Day. Odor tripled, went 4-for-5 and drove in five runs in the 12-2 win over the Tigers. This was Odor’s Box-Toppers debut, the first time he earned Player of the Game honors. He is the 3,336th player to debut in Box-Toppers since record keeping began in 1995. Odor made his Major League debut May 14 and was playing in his 12th big league game.

Odor also has our current favorite baseball name, pronounced “ROOG-ned oh-DORE,” according to Baseball-Reference.com. The Venezuelan-born player passes previous favorite name, Joey Terdoslavich of the Braves. (Terdoslavich is current on the Braves’ Triple-A minor league team. He played in Atlanta last season, but has yet to make his Box-Toppers debut.)

Ben Revere of the Phillies is National League Batter of the Day. Revere went 4-for-4 with a double and scored three runs in the 5-3 win over the Dodgers.

Vogelsong receives 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day. Kluber receives 1.7 for AL Player of the Day. Odor and Revere each receive 1.5 for being top Batter of the Day in their league.

All of Saturday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) receive 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
