Royals' Yordano Ventura, 7 no-hit innings, tops players for Friday, March 27's spring games

Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura, who threw seven no-hit innings, is Friday’s spring training Player of the Day.

Ventura allowed two walks and struck out four in the 5-1 win over the Mariners.

Rafael Ortega of the Cardinals is National League Player of the Day. Ortega hit two home runs and drove in four runs in the 5-4 win over the Mets.

Box-Toppers points aren’t awarded for spring training games, but if this were the regular season, Ventura would earn 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Ortega would earn 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day. All of Friday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) would have received 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

There was no AL Batter of the Day Friday (which would have earned a player 1.5 Box-Toppers points) because no AL batter earned Player of the Game honors.

Sixteen spring training games were scheduled Friday. Two were cancelled and one other game ended in a tie (Cardinals and Nationals tied at 1). It was not included in Box-Toppers results.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
