Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer passes Dodgers pitcher Kershaw for the Box-Toppers season player rankings lead. Kershaw had led all players for nearly 16 weeks, since May 7.
Scherzer has 20.7 Box-Toppers points on the season, moving ahead of Kershaw (20.0). Kershaw maintained his lead for more than two months since he last earned Player of the Game honors on June 20. Kershaw has been on the disabled list since June 26. He’s scheduled to return as early as Saturday and reports indicate he could return to pitching in mid-September.
When Kershaw reached 20.0 Box-Toppers points on June 20, the second-place player, Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez, had 11.7 points. Scherzer had 10.0 points and ranked fourth. At that point, Kershaw seemed on track to earn 40.0 Box-Toppers points in the season, shattering the single-season record of 33.5 points set twice by Randy Johnson (2000 and 2002, both with the Diamondbacks).
Scherzer also becomes the new Box-Toppers points leader among National League pitchers.
All other Box-Toppers category leaders remained the same from last week:
American League pitchers—Corey Kluber of the Indians continues to lead with 17.2 Box-Toppers points, fourth among all players.
American League batters—Jose Altuve of the Astros leads with 12.5 Box-Toppers points. He ranks 12th among all players.
National League batters—Kris Bryant of the Cubs leads with 9.0 Box-Toppers points. He ranks 36th among all players.
So far this season, 658 different players have earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors. There are 328 players who have more than 2.0 Box-Toppers points. There are 112 players who have made their Box-Toppers debut so far this season (six in the past week), the first time in their career they earned Player of the Game honors.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
