Also Wednesday, Astros pitcher Justin Verlander rises to seventh place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning American League Player of the Day honors. Plus, Mookie Betts of the Red Sox rises to 10th place in player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors.

Player of the Day—Gray struck out 11 over six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk, in the 5-2 win over the Padres.

American League Player of the Day—Astros pitcher Justin Verlander struck out nine over seven innings, allowing two runs, four hits and no walks, in the 5-2 win over the Angels.

Verlander earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 4.7 points for the season, rising to seventh place in season player rankings. He ranks fourth among AL pitchers.

American League Batter of the Day—Nicholas Castellanos of the Tigers homered and went 4-for-5, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 13-10 win over the Pirates.

Rankings—Mookie Betts of the Red Sox rises to 10th place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.

Betts (2HR 2-5 2R 3BI in the 4-3 win over the Blue Jays) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 4.2 for the season. He rises to first place among AL batters, passing previous leader and teammate Hanley Ramirez (3.5).

Debuts—Two players made their Box-Toppers debut Wednesday, the first time in their careers they earned Player of the Game honors:
