About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Pillar earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, his first points of the 2018 season. He ranks 67th among American League batters.

Pillar had a Box-Toppers game score Friday of +5.0, the same as three other players and a relatively low score to earn Player of the Day honors. Pillar ranked first among the four with game scores of +5.0 on tiebreakers. Ranked just behind him is Joe Mauer of the Twins, Player of the Game in the 11-8 win over the Rays (HR 2-3 2R 4BI). Pillar ranked higher because he had more at bats (five vs. three).

Pillar also ranked ahead of two pitchers with game scores of +5.0 because in cases of game score ties, batters rank ahead of pitchers. The two pitchers with game scores of +5.0 were Zack Godley of the Diamondbacks and Caleb Ferguson of the Dodgers.

National League Player of the Day—Diamondbacks pitcher Zack Godley struck out seven over six innings, allowing one run, five hits and one walk, in the 2-1 win over the Braves.

Godley had a Box-Toppers game score of +5.0, same as overall Player of the Day Pillar but Pillar ranked higher because in cases of game score ties, batters beat pitchers. Godley also had the same game score as Dodgers pitcher Caleb Ferguson, Player of the Game in the 2-1 win over the Angels (2IP 0H 0R 0BB 3K W), but Godley ranked higher to earn NL Player of the Day honors because he had more innings pitched (six vs. two).

National League Batter of the Day—Jesse Winker of the Reds doubled and went 3-for-3, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 9-1 win over the Cardinals.

American League Batter of the Day—There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Friday because the overall Player of the Day is AL batter Kevin Pillar.

Notable—Phillies pitcher Jake Arrieta has the most Box-Toppers points among the 15 who earned Player of the Game honors Friday.

Arrieta (7IP 3H 0R 3BB 3K W in the 2-0 win over the Marlins) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 6.7 for the season, 40th among all players and 15th among NL pitchers.

Also notable—Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard earned Player of the Game honors for batting.

Syndergaard (1-2 0R BI in the 4-2 win over the Nationals) became the third pitcher this season to earn Player of the Game honors for batting (in the same game in which he pitched). Syndergaard had a Box-Toppers game score of 0.0 for batting and a game score of -3.0 for pitching (5IP 7H R 2BB 3K W). In 2017, pitchers earned Player of the Game honors for batting seven times.

Debut—Two players made their Box-Toppers debut Friday, the first time in their career they earned Player of the Game honors:

  • Leury Garcia of the White Sox (HR 2B 3-5 2R 3BI in the 9-6 win over the Royals) made his Major League debut April 6, 2013, and was playing in his 296th career game. He is the 4,019th player to debut in Box-Toppers since record keeping began in 1995.

  • Steven Duggar of the Giants (2-2B 2-4 3R 2BI in the 7-1 win over the Athletics) made his Major League debut July 8 and was playing in his fourth career game. He is the 4,020th player to debut in Box-Toppers since record keeping began in 1995.

Scoring—Pillar earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Godley earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Winker earns 1.5 points for being NL Batter of the Day. All of Friday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
