Juan Soto of the Nationals is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Tuesday’s World Series Game 1.
The Washington Nationals win 5-4 to take a 1-0 lead over the Houston Astros in the best-of-seven game series.
Soto homered, doubled and went 3-for-4, scoring once and driving in three runs. He had a Box-Toppers game score of +3.0, highest among all Nationals players.
Soto had 6.0 Box-Toppers points during the regular season, 141st among all players, 23rd among National League batters, seventh among NL outfielders, second among Nationals batters (behind Asdrubal Cabrera’s 9.0 points), but most among Nationals batters who played for the team the entire season (Cabrera was with the Rangers earlier in 2019). It is his first Player of the Game honor of the 2019 postseason.
Closer Sean Doolittle had the second-highest Box-Toppers game score (+2.1) among Nationals players (1.1IP 0H 0R 0BB K Sv).
Nationals starting pitcher Max Scherzer had a game score of 0.0 (5IP 5H 2R 3BB 7K ND).
Astros starting pitcher Gerrit Cole had a Box-Toppers game score Tuesday of -6.0 (7IP 8H 5R BB 6K L). Cole has earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors three times this postseason, tied for the most such honors with Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg. Cole also led all players in 2019 with 32.2 Box-Toppers points in 2019, the fourth-highest single-season point total since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.
Tuesday was the first time since Aug. 1 that Cole has appeared in a game and did not earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in either the regular season or postseason. That includes 12 appearances—nine in the regular season and three in the postseason. It is the first time he has appeared in an Astros loss since July 12, snapping his streak of appearing in 16 straight Astros wins, 13 in the regular season, three in the postseason.
Centerfielder George Springer had the highest Box-Toppers game score among Astros players of +3.0 (HR 2B 2-3 2R 2BI).
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
