Player of the Day—Leake pitched a complete-game, one-hit shutout, striking out six and allowing one walk, in the 10-0 win over the Angels. Leake carried a perfect game into the ninth inning before giving up a hit and a walk.
Leake earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 3.0 for the season, 205th among all players and 57th among American League pitchers.
National League Player of the Day—Giants pitcher Tyler Beede struck out five over eight scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk, in the 1-0, 10-inning win over the Mets. Beede did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the game was a in a scoreless tie when he exited.
American League Batter of the Day—Oscar Mercado of the Indians doubled and went 5-for-5, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 10-5 win over the Royals.
National League Batter of the Day—Paul DeJong of the Cardinals homered, doubled and went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 12-11 win over the Reds.
Verlander—Astros pitcher Justin Verlander extended his lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.
Verlander (6IP 8H 2R BB 12K W in the 4-3 win over the Rangers) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 15.8 for the season. While he had been tied with Rays pitcher Charlie Morton (14.8), Verlander ranked ahead because he held the tiebreaking advantage (he had more 2018 Box-Toppers points–24.1 vs. 14.8). Now Verlander holds the 1.0 point advantage over Morton, who ranks second overall and among AL pitchers.
Verlander has led all players in season Box-Toppers player rankings since May 10, but had not earned any points since June 23.
