About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Also Wednesday, Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu rises to eighth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors.

Player of the Day—Berrios struck out 11 over seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks, in the 7-4 win over the Marlins.

Berrios earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 7.0 for the season, 40th among all players and 18th among American League pitchers.

National League Player of the Day—Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom struck out 11 over seven innings, allowing one run, five hits and two walks, in the 4-2 win over the White Sox. deGrom did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the game was tied when he exited.

deGrom earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 9.4 for the season, 20th among all players and ninth among NL pitchers.

American League Batter of the Day—Roberto Perez of the Indians hit two home runs, including a three-run shot, in the 10-4 win over the Astros. Perez went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in four runs.

National League Batter of the Day—There is no NL Batter of the Day for Wednesday because no NL batter earned Player of the Game honors.

Rankings—Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu rises from 10th to eighth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.

Ryu (6IP 3H 0R BB K ND in the 5-1 win over the Rockies) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 13.7 for the season. He ranks fourth among NL pitchers.

Notable—Reds pitcher Luis Castillo now has 11.4 Box-Toppers points for the season, rising to 13th place in player rankings, after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.

Castillo (7IP 6H R 0BB 7K W in the 4-1 win over the Pirates) ranks seventh among NL pitchers.

Also notable—Pitcher Zack Greinke, who ranks 10th in Box-Toppers season player rankings with 13.2 Box-Toppers points, was the most notable player who changed teams at Wednesday’s trade deadline.

Greinke was traded from the Diamondbacks to the Astros and was the only player ranked in the top 10 to change teams.

Greinke made his final start for the Diamondbacks Thursday in a 7-5 loss to the Yankees. Player of the Game was Yankees middle reliever Adam Ottavino (1IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K W) with a Box-Toppers game score of +3.0. Greinke had a Box-Toppers game score of +3.0 in the losing effort, highest among Diamondbacks players Wednesday (5IP 2R 2H 3BB 7K ND).

Greinke becomes the third Astros player ranked in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10, joining the two top-ranked pitchers Justin Verlander (18.8 points) and Gerrit Cole (17.1). The Washington Nationals also have three pitchers in the top 10: Fifth-ranked Stephen Strasburg (15.7), sixth-ranked Max Scherzer (14.4) and ninth-ranked Patrick Corbin (13.4).

Greinke also ranks fifth in career Box-Toppers points since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began with 202.4. He trails fourth-ranked player, Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia (203.4) by just 1.0 point and ranks third among active players in career points, behind Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (223.5) and Sabathia. Greinke is one of six active players in Box-Toppers “all-time” career points list and is one of five active players ranked from fourth to eighth who are separated by just 7.2 points (from Sabathia’s 203.4 points to eighth-ranked Max Scherzer with 196.2).

A fuller assessment on the impact of trade deadline moves will come Friday, when Box-Toppers posts its weekly team rankings report. As players change teams, they move their season point total to the accumulated total of their new team, resulting in changes in Box-Toppers team power rankings. The Astros were already Box-Toppers’ top-ranked team last week and the addition of Greinke’s 13.2 points is likely to solidify their lead.

Debut—Two players made their Box-Toppers debut Wednesday, each with their first career Player of the Game honor:

  • Willie Calhoun of the Rangers (HR 1-4 2R 3BI in the 9-7 win over the Mariners) made his Major League debut Sept. 12, 2017, and was playing in his 79th career game.

  • Blue Jays pitcher Justin Shafer (1IP 0R 0H 0BB K Sv in the 4-1 win over the Royals) made his Major League debut Aug. 19, 2018, and was playing in his 22nd career game.

Scoring—Berrios earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and deGrom earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Perez earns 1.5 points for being AL Batter of the Day. All of Wednesday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
