Rankings—Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg extended his 2019 Box-Toppers points lead among NL pitchers after earning Player of the Game honors Saturday.

Strasburg (7IP 3H 0R 3BB 6K ND in the 10-4, 10-inning win over the Marlins) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 19.7 for the season, putting him 2.3 points ahead of second-place NL pitcher Jacob deGrom of the Mets (17.4).

Strasburg reaching 19.7 points ensures that there will not be a new record set for lowest Box-Toppers point total to lead NL pitchers in a single season. The lowest Box-Toppers point total to lead NL pitchers in a single season is 19.1 in 2006 by John Smoltz of the Braves.

Strasburg also maintains his third-place ranking among all players, behind pitchers Gerrit Cole (29.2) and Justin Verlander (26.5), both of the Astros.

Strasburg now has 131.8 career Box-Toppers points, rising to 33rd place among all players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. With his 1.0 point Saturday, he passes Red Sox pitcher David Price (131.0) on the “all-time” list and now trails 32nd-ranked player Jason Giambi (133.4). Passing Price, Strasburg now ranks 12th among active players in career points.

Debut—Cardinals pitcher Tyler Webb made his Box-Toppers debut Saturday with his first career Player of the Game honor.

Webb (1.1IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K ND in the 9-8 win over the Cubs) made his Major League debut June 24, 2017, and was playing in his 92nd career game.

Scoring—Paxton earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Gonzalez earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Crawford and Grisham each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Saturday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
