About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
In addition, Astros pitcher Gerrit Cole wraps up Box-Toppers Player of the Year honors after the only other player in contention for the season Box-Toppers points lead—teammate Justin Verlander—did not earn Player of the Game honors Sunday. With only one start remaining for Verlander and only 2.0 Box-Toppers points possible, Cole’s 2.7-point lead is now all but insurmountable.
Also Sunday, Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu rises to 10th place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors.
Player of the Day—Severino struck out nine over five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks, in the 8-3 win over the Blue Jays.
Severino earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, his first points of the season. He ranks 388th among all players and 91st among American League pitchers.

* Cole has one start remaining in the 2019 regular season.
This is the first time Severino has earned Player of the Game honors in more than a year—he last did it Aug. 31, 2018. Severino had 17.7 Box-Toppers points in 2018, 10th among all players.
Severino’s 15.7-point decline from 2018 is now the third-largest among all players, behind Indians pitcher Corey Kluber (21.7-point decline from 21.7 in 2018 to 0.0 in 2019) and Rays pitcher Blake Snell (17.2-point decline from 27.2 in 2018 to 10.0 in 2019).
Severino was out much of the season with shoulder and other injuries.
National League Player of the Day—Giants pitcher Logan Webb struck out seven over six innings, allowing one run, two hits and two walks, in the 4-1 win over the Braves.
This is Webb’s Box-Toppers debut, the first time in his career he has earned Player of the Game honors. Webb made his Major League debut Aug. 17 and was playing in his seventh career game.
American League Batter of the Day—George Springer of the Astros hit three home runs and went 3-for-5, scoring three times and driving in four runs, in the 13-5 win over the Angels.
National League Batter of the Day—Seth Mejias-Brean of the Padres hit a walk-off homer, doubled and went 3-for-4, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 6-4, 10-inning win over the Diamondbacks.
This was Mejias-Brean’s Box-Toppers debut, the first time in his career he earned Player of the Game honors. Mejias-Brean made his Major League debut Sept. 4 and was playing in his ninth career game.
Player of the Year—Astros pitcher Gerrit Cole wraps up Box-Toppers Player of the Year honors after teammate Justin Verlander did not earn Player of the Game honors in Sunday’s Astros win.
Verlander (5IP 6H 2R 2BB 5K W in the 13-5 win over the Angels) had a Box-Toppers game score of -2.0, losing Player of the Game honors to teammate George Springer, whose Box-Toppers game score of +5.0, also won him Sunday AL Batter of the Day. It is just the third time this season that Verlander has failed to earn Player of the Game honors when earning the win. In his 20 wins, he has earned Player of the Game honors 17 times.
Verlander was the last player who could have caught Cole in Box-Toppers points. But Verlander (with 26.5 points) now trails Cole (29.2 points) by 2.7 points and only has one start remaining and can only earn 2.0 more points. Unless Verlander appears in middle relief or bats and is able to earn Player of the Game honors more than once with a week left in the season (unlikely), Cole has won Box-Toppers Player of the Year honors.
Rankings—Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu rises to 10th place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday.
Ryu (7IP 6H 3R 0BB 8K W in the 7-4 win over the Rockies) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 16.4 for the season, fifth among NL pitchers.
Notable—Rangers pitcher Lance Lynn now has 13.0 Box-Toppers points in 2019 after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday.
Lynn (5.1IP 7H 2R BB 12K W in the 8-3 win over the Athletics) ranks 23rd among all players and 10th among AL pitchers.
Also notable—Brewers pitcher Gio Gonzalez now has 108.6 career Box-Toppers points—63rd-most among all players since 1995—after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday.
Gonzalez (3.1IP H 0R 0BB 3K W in the 4-3 win over the Pirates) passes three players on the “all-time” list—Lance Berkman (108.1), Kevin Millwood (108.3) and Carlos Beltran (108.6). He trails 62nd-ranked player Billy Wagner (108.7). Gonzalez ranks 18th among active players in career points. He has 4.7 points in 2019, 64th among NL pitchers.
Debut—Orioles pitcher Richard Bleier also made his Box-Toppers debut Sunday with his first career Player of the Game honor.
Bleier (2IP 0H 0R 0BB K Sv in the 2-1 win over the Mariners) made his Major League debut May 30, 2016, and was playing in his 161st career game.
Scoring—Severino earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Webb earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Springer and Mejias-Brean each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Sunday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
