Angels pitcher Griffin Canning is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Monday’s summer exhibition games.

Canning struck out five over six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks, in the 1-0 win over the Padres.

Players are preparing for the opening of the pandemic-shortened regular season this week—opening day is Thursday—playing a series of games against other Major League teams.

Canning would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Box-Toppers Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.

Canning earned 6.7 Box-Toppers points in 2019, 39th among American League pitchers.

National League Player of the Day—Austin Slater of the Giants hit two doubles and went 3-for-4, scoring once and driving in five runs, in the 6-2 win over the Athletics.

Lindor would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day in a regular season day. Lindor earned 1.0 Box-Toppers points in 2019. In 2018, he earned 9.6 points, third among AL batters.

National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Monday because the overall NL Player of the Day is batter Austin Slater.
