Brewers’ Woodruff tops players for Wednesday, July 29; Rangers’ Lynn rises to lead player rankings

Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.

Meanwhile, Rangers pitcher Lance Lynn rises to lead Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning American League Player of the Day honors. He is one of three players Wednesday to win Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for a second time this season.

Player of the Day—Woodruff struck out 10 over 6 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk, in the 3-0 win over the Pirates.

Woodruff earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and is seventh in Box-Toppers season player rankings.

American League Player of the Day—Rangers pitcher Lance Lynn struck out eight over six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks, in the 7-4 win over the Diamondbacks. Lynn did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the Diamondbacks took the lead after he exited.

Lynn earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 2.7 for the season, rising to first place in Box-Toppers season player rankings, displacing previous leader, Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks (2.0), who falls to third place.

Lynn is one of three players to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the second time this season. Wednesday was the first day that any player had earned multiple Player of the Game honors in 2020. The others:

  • Reds pitcher Sonny Gray (6.2IP H 2R BB 11K W in the 12-7 win over the Cubs), who earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 2.0 for the season, rising to second place in season player rankings.

  • JaCoby Jones of the Tigers (HR 2-2B 3-3 2R BI in the 5-4 win over the Royals), who earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 2.0 for the season, rising to 10th place in season player rankings.

American League Batter of the Day—Aaron Judge of the Yankees homered and went 2-for-3, scoring three times and driving in two runs, in the 9-3 win over the Orioles.

National League Batter of the Day—Freddie Freeman of the Braves homered, doubled and went 4-for-5, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 7-4 win over the Rays.

Freeman has now earned Box-Toppers points in 10 straight seasons. He earned his first Player of the Game honor in 2011 with the Braves and has 60.9 career points, 10th among active NL batters. His best season was 2013 when he had 11.5 Box-Toppers points, second among NL batters. In 2019, he had 10.2 points, fourth among NL batters.

Streak—Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer has now earned Box-Toppers points in 12 straight seasons after earning his first Player of the Game honor of 2020 Wednesday.

Scherzer (7.1IP 3H 0R 3BB 10K ND in the 4-0, 10-inning win over the Blue Jays) earned his first points in 2009 with the Diamondbacks. His best season was 2016 with the Nationals when he had 25.7 Box-Toppers points to lead all players.  Scherzer had 15.4 points in 2019, ninth among NL pitchers.

Scherzer now has 198.2 career Box-Toppers points, eighth among all players since 1995, when player tracking began. He trails seventh-ranked player, Albert Pujols of the Angels (201.8). Scherzer ranks fifth among active players in career points.

Debut—Dodgers pitcher Dennis Santana made his Box-Toppers debut Wednesday with his first career Player of the Game honor.

Santana (2.1IP 0H 0R 2BB 4K W in the 4-2, 13-inning win over the Astros) made his Major League debut June 1, 2018, and was playing in his sixth career game. 

Scoring—Woodruff earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Lynn earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Judge and Freeman each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Wednesday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
