American League Player of the Day—Orioles pitcher Keegan Akin struck out eight over 5 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and four walks, in the 6-1 win over the Yankees. Akin did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the game was in a scoreless tie when he exited.

Details of Box-Toppers season streaks as of May 2, 2020

Streak—Albert Pujols of the Angels Saturday broke the record for most consecutive seasons earning Box-Toppers points at 20 after earning his first Player of the Game honor of 2020.

Pujols (2-3 R 3BI in the 7-6, seven-inning win over the Astros) breaks the record of 19 seasons held by three other players—Jason Giambi (1995-2013), Carlos Beltran (1999-2017) and CC Sabathia (2001-2019).

Pujols earned his first Box-Toppers points in 2001 with the Cardinals and now has 202.8 career points, seventh among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He trails sixth-ranked player Sabathia (203.4) by 0.6 points. Pujols has the most career Box-Toppers points among all batters since 1995, ahead of Alex Rodriguez (187.0). He ranks fourth among active players in career points.

The 20-season streak for Pujols is now two seasons longer than the next-longest currently active streak of 18 seasons by Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers (2003-2020).

Pujols’ best season was 2009 with the Cardinals when he had 16.7 Box-Toppers points, leading all NL batters and ranking eighth among all players that season. Pujols has led NL batters in Box-Toppers points five times—leading the league in season Box-Toppers points more than any other batter—all with the Cardinals:

  • In 2003, he had 16.5 points.

  • In 2004—15.9.

  • 2008—15.2.

  • 2009—16.7.

  • 2010—15.4.

Pujols, 40, had 11.0 Box-Toppers points in 2019 with the Angels, third among AL batters, his best season with the Angels and the most points he had earned in a single season since 2011 with the Cardinals (12.5), when he ranked second among NL batters.

Pujols has had as few as 3.0 points in a season in 2018 with the Angels.

Interestingly, Pujols set the record on a day in which he had no home runs and no extra base hits. Pujols ranks sixth all-time in home runs (659), most among all active players. It also comes on a day in which teammate Mike Trout also earned Player of the Game honors (the Angels played a doubleheader Saturday).

Rankings—White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito rises from sixth to third place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Saturday.

Giolito (6IP 5H 3R 0BB 9K W in the 5-3 win over the Royals) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 7.0 for the season. Giolito rises to second place among AL pitchers, behind Shane Bieber of the Indians (8.7).

Rankings—Twins pitcher Kenta Maeda rises to sixth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Saturday.

Maeda (6IP 2H 3R BB 8K ND in the 4-3 win over the Tigers) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 6.4 for the season. He ranks third among AL pitchers, behind Bieber (8.7) and Giolito (7.0).

Debut—Two players made their Box-Toppers debut Saturday, each with their first career Player of the Game honor:

  • Nationals pitcher Kyle McGowin (2.1IP 0H 0R BB 4K W in the 10-4 win over the Braves) made his Major League debut Sept. 5, 2018, and was playing in his 13th career game.

  • Josh Fuentes of the Rockies (2B 1-1 0R 2BI in the 5-2 win over the Dodgers) made his Major League debut April 6, 2019, and was playing in his 34th career game.

Scoring—Suarez earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Akin earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Trout earns 1.5 points for being AL Batter of the Day. All of Saturday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
