* Alec Bohm needed 186 plate appearances to qualify for batting average leader. He had 180. However, if six more hitless appearances are added to his total, he would still rank seventh in batting averages among all players. He had 54 hits in 160 at bats (.338). Adding six more hitless at bats (54 hits in 166 at bats), would give him an average of .325.

Juan Soto of the Nationals led all National League batters with a .351 average, second overall. He had 2.0 Box-Toppers points in 2020, 161st overall, 35th among NL batters.

The NL leader in Box-Toppers points among batters, Marcell Ozuna of the Braves, ranks fourth in batting average (.338). Ozuna had 4.5 Box-Toppers points in 2020, 38th among all players.

Tim Anderson of the White Sox has the most Box-Toppers points among AL players on 2020’s top 10 batting average list. Anderson, who ranks eighth in batting average (.322), earned 4.5 Box-Toppers points in 2020, 42nd overall and seventh among AL batters.

In addition to LeMahieu, Ozuna and Anderson, two other players among Box-Toppers’ top 100 in 2020 also ranked among the top 10 in batting average for the season:

  • Freddie Freeman of the Braves, third in batting average (.341), had 3.5 Box-Toppers points in 2020, 70th overall and eighth among NL batters.

  • Trea Turner of the Nationals, fifth in batting average (.335), had 3.0 Box-Toppers points in 2020, 90th overall and 15th among NL batters.

Box-Toppers looks at games one by one. And it seeks the one player who most helped their team win each game. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Michael Conforto of the Mets had the lowest Box-Toppers point total among the overall top 10 players in batting average in 2020. Conforto ranked ninth in batting average (.322) and earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point in 2020, 300th overall and 81st among NL batters.

Alec Bohm of the Phillies is listed in seventh place, though his batting average (.338) was fifth-best. That’s because Bohm did not have enough plate appearances to qualify for the batting average title. He needed 186 appearances and had just 180. However, if six more hitless appearances are added to his total, he would still rank seventh in batting averages among all players. He had 54 hits in 160 at bats (.338). Adding six more hitless at bats (54 hits in 166 at bats), would give him an average of .325. Bohm earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points in 2020, 219th among all batters.

Luke Voit of the Yankees, who led all batters in Box-Toppers points in 2020 (6.0) ranks 50th in batting average (.277) among the 142 players who met the minimum plate-appearance requirement (which does not include Bohm).

Batting average leaders tend not to be among the leaders in Box-Toppers points, although 2018 was an exception, when the top three batters in Box-Toppers rankings were also the top three in batting average. Generally, Box-Toppers favors batters who hit for more power with more home runs and runs batted in who more frequently earn Player of the Game honors.
