8 of 14 RBI leaders among top 100 players in Box-Toppers points for 2020

Eight of the top 14 runs batted in leaders were among the top 100 players in Box-Toppers points in 2020.

Six of those players were also among their league’s top 10 batters during the pandemic-shortened season.

Here is how 2020 runs batted in (RBI) leaders fared in Box-Toppers points. Players are ranked by RBIs. Also shown are their 2020 Box-Toppers points (BTP) and their rank in Box-Toppers points among all players.

BTP: Box-Toppers points

Jose Abreu of the White Sox led all players with 60 RBIs. He had 4.5 Box-Toppers points in 2020, 41st among all players and sixth among American League batters. 

Abreu hit 60 RBIs in just 60 games, 37 percent of the length of the usual 162-game schedule. In a full schedule of 162 games in 2019, he hit just over twice as many RBIs—123—which ranked second among all players. (Anthony Rendon of the Nationals ranked first in 2019 with 126 RBIs.)

Marcell Ozuna of the Braves ranked second in RBIs in 2020 with 56, first among all National League players. Ozuna had 4.5 Box-Toppers points in 2020, 38th among all players and first among NL batters. (While Ozuna and Abreu both had 4.5 Box-Toppers points in 2020, Ozuna ranked higher because he had more 2019 Box-Toppers points—12.0 vs. 7.5.)

Luke Voit of the Yankees, who led all batters in Box-Toppers points in 2020 with 6.0, ranked fourth in RBIs with 52. Voit ranked 22nd among all players in Box-Toppers points during the season, first among AL batters.

Three other players were also among their league’s top 10 batters and top 14 in RBIs in 2020:

  • Freddie Freeman of the Braves ranked third in RBIs with 53. He had 3.5 Box-Toppers points, eighth among NL batters and 70th among all players.

  • Mike Trout of the Angels tied for sixth in RBIs with 46. He had 4.5 Box-Toppers points, fifth among AL batters and 40th among all players.

  • Kyle Tucker of the Astros tied for 10th in RBIs with 42. He had 5.0 Box-Toppers points, fourth among AL batters and 32nd among all players.

Two other players among the top 14 in RBIs were also among the overall top 100 players in Box-Toppers points in 2020:

  • Jose Ramirez of the Indians tied for sixth in RBIs with 46. He had 3.5 Box-Toppers points, 78th among all players and 14th among AL batters.

  • Fernando Tatis Jr. of the Padres ranked eighth in RBIs with 45. He had 3.0 Box-Toppers points, 94th among all players and 18th among NL batters.

Six players among the top 14 in RBIs ranked outside the overall top 100 players in Box-Toppers points in 2020, including two who earned Player of the Game honors just once and one who earned no Player of the Game honors. All three had 42 RBIs in 2020, tied for 10th:

  • Charlie Blackmon of the Rockies had 1.5 Box-Toppers points, 257th overall and 63rd among NL batters. He earned NL Batter of the Day honors on Sept. 11, his only 2020 Player of the Game honor.

  • Matt Olson of the Athletics had 1.0 Box-Toppers point, 328th overall and 76th among AL batters. He earned his only 2020 Player of the Game honor on Sept. 11.

  • Dominic Smith of the Mets had 0.0 Box-Toppers points, 741st among all players and 176th among NL batters. He did not earn Player of the Game honors in any of the 50 games and 23 Mets wins in which he appeared during the season.
