Trea Turner of the Dodgers led all players with a .328 batting average in 2021. He had 2.5 Box-Toppers points, 365th among all players and 75th among National League batters. Turner was the key player in just two of his team wins in 2021:

  • On June 30, when he was with the Nationals, he was Player of the Game in the 15-6 win over the Rays, earning 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

  • On Oct. 1, after he was traded to the Dodgers, he was Player of the Game in the 8-6 win over the Brewers. He was also NL Batter of the Day, giving him 1.5 Box-Toppers points.

Yuli Gurriel of the Astros had the highest batting average in the AL (.319), second-highest overall. He had 3.5 Box-Toppers points in 2021, 174th among all players and 61st among AL batters.

Box-Toppers looks at games one by one. And it seeks the one player who most helped their team win each game. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Adam Frazier of the Padres had the lowest Box-Toppers point total among the overall top 10 players in batting average in 2021. Frazier ranked 10th in batting average (.305) and earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point in 2021, 672nd overall and 157th among NL batters.

Jose Ramirez of the Indians, who led all batters in Box-Toppers points in 2021 (13.0) ranks 62nd in batting average (.266) among the 134 players who met the minimum requirement (at least 3.1 plate appearances per game).

Batting average leaders tend not to be among the leaders in Box-Toppers points, although 2018 was an exception, when the top three batters in Box-Toppers rankings were also the top three in batting average. Generally, Box-Toppers favors batters who hit for more power with more home runs and runs batted in who more frequently earn Player of the Game honors.
