Twins pitcher Sonny Gray is Sunday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Also Sunday, Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara rises to fourth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning National League Player of the Day honors. Plus, Pete Alonso of the Mets extends his lead among NL batters in Box-Toppers rankings after earning NL Batter of the Day honors.
Player of the Day—Gray struck out seven over six innings, allowing one run, two hits and one walk, in the 9-1 win over the Tigers.
Gray earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 9.4 for the season, 20th among all players and 10th among American League pitchers.
National League Player of the Day—Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara struck out 10 over six innings, allowing two runs, two hits and three walks, in the 6-5, 10-inning win over the Pirates. Alcantara did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the Pirates tied the game after he exited.
Alcantara earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 14.4 for the season, rising from fifth to fourth in season player rankings. He extends his lead among NL pitchers, ahead of second-place Joe Musgrove of the Padres (12.4).
American League Batter of the Day—Adolis Garcia of the Rangers homered and went 4-for-4, scoring three times and driving in three runs, in the 11-8 win over the Athletics.
National League Batter of the Day—Pete Alonso of the Mets hit a three-run homer, doubled and went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 8-5 win over the Padres.
Alonso earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day, giving him 10.7 for the season, 12th among all players and extending his lead among NL batters, ahead of second-place Mookie Betts of the Dodgers (8.0).
Alonso becomes the 16th player this season to reach 10.0 Box-Toppers points and the first who is solely a batter. (Shohei Ohtani of the Angels also has exceeded 10.0 Box-Toppers points, but has earned just 4.0 as a batter—the other 13.0 come as a starting pitcher.) In 2021, there were 49 players who reached 10.0 Box-Toppers points, including five batters.
This is Alonso’s first season with 10.0 or more Box-Toppers points. In 2021, he had 3.0 Box-Toppers points with the Mets, 63rd among NL batters. In his best season, 2019 with the Mets, he had 7.0 Box-Toppers points, 17th among NL batters.
This is Alonso’s first Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor since June 4. He earned 7.7 of his points in less than a month between May 8 and June 4. Alonso has earned Player of the Game honors seven times this season, each time earning bonus points as either NL Batter of the Day (0.5 points) or overall NL Player of the Day (0.7 points), which he did once on May 27.
Notable—Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes becomes the 15th player to reach 10.0 Box-Toppers points this season after earning Player of the Game honors.
Cortes (6IP 6H 0R 0BB 7K W in the 7-0 win over the Orioles) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 10.4 for the season, 14th among all players, seventh among AL pitchers.
This is Cortes’ first season with 10.0 or more Box-Toppers points. His best previous season was 2021 with the Yankees when he had 5.0 points, 64th among AL pitchers.
