Tyler O'Neill of the Cardinals is Monday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.

O’Neill hit two home runs and went 2-for-4, scoring three times and driving in three runs, in the 13-4 win over the Reds.

O’Neill earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 6.0 for the season, 90th among all players and ninth among National League batters.

This is the second straight day O’Neill has earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors. He was also NL Batter of the Day Sunday (HR 1-1 R 3BI in the 6-3 win over the Braves). O’Neill has earned 3.5 of his 6.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022 in the past two days.

O’Neill also becomes just the fifth batter this season to win overall Player of the Day honors. In the season’s other 137 days, a pitcher has won Player of the Day honors. O’Neill wins Player of the Day honors on a day only eight games were played. Three of the four other batters earning Player of the Day honors this season also did it on days with fewer than 10 games played, a factor that improves batters’ chances of winning Player of the Day. O’Neill had the lowest Box-Toppers game score (+4.0) among the five batters who have earned Player of the Day honors this season.

Here are the other batters who have earned Player of the Day honors this season:

  • May 12Giancarlo Stanton of the Yankees, who did it on a day only nine games were played, with a +8.0 game score.

  • May 19Trevor Story of the Red Sox, who did it on a day only eight games were played, with a +12.0 game score.

  • June 12Matt Carpenter of the Yankees, who did it on a day with a complete 15-game schedule, with a +9.0 game score.

  • June 30Michael Perez of the Pirates, who did it on a day only eight games were played, with a +8.0 game score.

Twins pitcher Caleb Thielbar is Monday’s Box-Toppers AL Player of the Day.

American League Player of the Day—Twins pitcher Caleb Thielbar struck out one over 1 1/3 scoreless innings of middle relief, allowing no hits and no walks, in the 4-2 win over the Red Sox.

Thielbar earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 4.7 for the season, 52nd among AL pitchers and second among AL middle relievers, behind Nick Vespi of the Orioles (5.0).

Danny Jansen of the Blue Jays is Monday’s Box-Toppers AL Batter of the Day.

American League Batter of the Day—Danny Jansen of the Blue Jays hit a three-run home run and went 2-for-5, scoring once and driving in four runs, in the 5-4, 11-inning win over the Cubs.

National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Monday because the overall Player of the Day is NL batter Tyler O’Neill.

Angels pitcher Jose Suarez is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Monday’s win over the Yankees.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
