Mets pitcher Max Scherzer is Monday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Scherzer threw six perfect innings, striking out nine and allowing no baserunners, in the 7-2 win over the Brewers. He was pulled after 68 pitches as he was making his first appearance after being reinstated from the injured list. Mets relievers subsequently gave up four hits and two runs.
Scherzer earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 10.0 for the season, 46th among all players and 19th among National League pitchers.
Scherzer becomes the 47th player to reach 10.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022. It is his 11th season with 10.0 or more points. His best season was 2016 with the Nationals, when he had 25.7 points, first among all players. Scherzer also led all players in 2021 with 25.1 points with the Nationals and Dodgers.
Scherzer also now has 236.3 career Box-Toppers points, fourth among all players since tracking began in 1995. He trails third-ranked player Pedro Martinez (244.8) by 8.5 points. (Box-Toppers projects Martinez would have about 270 career points if his entire career from 1992 were tracked.)
Scherzer ranks second among active players in career points behind Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (257.6), who also earned Player of the Game honors Monday. Scherzer also ranks second to Kershaw among active NL pitchers in career points.
American League Player of the Day—Mariners pitcher Logan Gilbert struck out 11 over six innings, allowing one run, four hits and one walk, in the 9-1 win over the Angels.
Gilbert earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 13.1 for the season, 22nd among all players and 10th among AL pitchers.
National League Batter of the Day—Thairo Estrada of the Giants hit a three-run homer, doubled and went 3-for-6, scoring three times and driving in three runs, in the 10-7, 10-inning win over the Rockies.
American League Batter of the Day—There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Monday because no AL batter earned Player of the Game honors.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
