▪️ Box-Toppers points of the day’s top players.
Seth Gray of the Twins is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Tuesday’s final day of 2023 spring training games.
Gray hit a three-run homer and went 1-for-1, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 7-5 win over the Pirates.
Gray would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.
Gray has yet to make his regular season Major League debut and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.
National League Player of the Day—Brewers pitcher Freddy Peralta struck out five over 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and one walk, in the 5-3 win over the Royals.
Peralta would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game.
Peralta had a +4.2 Box-Toppers game score, same as Diamondbacks pitcher Ryne Nelson, who was Player of the Game in the 3-1 win over the Guardians (5.2IP 4H R 0BB 5K ND). Peralta won NL Player of the Day on a tiebreaker because he earned the win while Nelson picked up a no-decision.
Peralta earned 7.4 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 38th among NL pitchers.
National League Batter of the Day—Michael Harris II of the Braves went 1-for-2, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 7-5 win over the Red Sox.
Harris earned 3.5 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 55th among NL batters.
American League Batter of the Day—There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Tuesday because the overall Player of the Day is AL batter Seth Gray.
Notable—Rangers pitcher Martin Perez has the most 2022 Box-Toppers points among Tuesday’s spring training Player of the Game winners.
Perez (5IP 2H R BB 5K ND in the 5-3 win over the Royals) earned 9.1 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 28th among AL pitchers.
Also notable—Two players earned repeat Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors during spring training Tuesday:
Diamondbacks pitcher Ryne Nelson (5.2IP 4H R 0BB 5K ND in the 3-1 win over the Guardians) earned his second Player of the Game honor of spring Tuesday. He also did it March 17.
Edmundo Sosa of the Phillies (0-0 0R 2BI on two sacrifice flies in the 6-5 win over the Blue Jays) earned his third Player of the Game honor of spring Tuesday. He also did it Feb. 27 and March 9.
In Tuesday’s nine spring training games between two Major League clubs (see chart below for game details), six who earned Player of the Game honors have earned Box-Toppers points in the past (see those players here); the remaining three players have yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in a regular season game.
Tuesday’s games conclude the 2023 spring training season. The regular season begins Thursday after a one-day break Wednesday. All 30 teams are scheduled to play on Opening Day. Box-Toppers will post Opening Day pitching matchups in our annual First Day of Baseball and Introduction to Box-Toppers post later today.
Scoring—No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Gray would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Peralta would have earned 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Harris would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day. All of Tuesday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
