About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Box-Toppers offers two perspectives on All-Star teams—the first includes the Box-Toppers points leaders at each position for the current 2023 season. The second includes the points leaders at each position for the combined 2022 and 2023 seasons.
The chart above shows the leaders at each position in both the American League and National League for 2023 and 2022-23. There are 10 players who make both the 2023 and 2022-23 All-Star teams, including:
AL outfield—Aaron Judge, Yankees
AL designated hitter—Shohei Ohtani, Angels
AL starting pitcher—Shane McClanahan, Rays
AL starting pitcher—Kevin Gausman, Blue Jays
AL closing pitcher—Felix Bautista, Orioles
NL second base—Luis Arraez, Marlins
NL shortstop—Willy Adames, Brewers
NL third base—Max Muncy, Dodgers
NL outfield—Jake Fraley, Reds
NL starting pitcher—Zac Gallen, Diamondbacks
Both leagues have 14 spots each on Box-Toppers All-Star team—the customary five infield spots, three for outfield, four for starting pitchers plus one spot for closing pitcher and one spot for designated hitter.
Fans don’t get to pick pitchers for the All-Star Game (which doesn’t make sense), but Box-Toppers lists the top pitchers by league in Box-Toppers points for both 2023 and 2022-23.
It should be noted that Shohei Ohtani of the Angels leads both AL pitchers and batters in Box-Toppers points. He could start for the AL at both positions, much like he starts at both positions for the Angels on the days he pitches. But we placed him at just designated hitter on our All-Star team, in something of the spirit of Little League baseball, to give more players a chance.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
