Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove is Tuesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Also Tuesday, Marlins pitcher Jesus Luzardo rises to sixth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors.
Player of the Day
Musgrove struck out 11 over seven innings, allowing one run, three hits and one walk, in the 8-5 win over the Angels.
Musgrove earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 4.0 for the season, 96th among all players and 31st among National League pitchers.
American League Player of the Day
Mariners pitcher Logan Gilbert pitched a complete-game, five-hit shutout, striking out seven and walking none, in the 6-0 win over the Giants.
Gilbert earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 7.7 for the season, 19th among all players and ninth among AL pitchers.
American League Batter of the Day
Mitch Garver of the Rangers hit a three-run homer, doubled and went 2-for-2, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 6-2 win over the Red Sox.
National League Batter of the Day
Jonathan India of the Reds hit two homers and went 3-for-6, scoring three times and driving in three runs, in the 8-4 win over the Nationals.
Rankings
Marlins pitcher Jesus Luzardo rises from 10th to sixth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Tuesday.
Luzardo (6IP 5H 0R 2BB 8K W in the 15-2 win over the Cardinals) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 10.1 for the season. He ranks third among NL pitchers, behind Spencer Strider of the Braves (10.7) and Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers (10.1). Though he has the same point total as Kershaw, Luzardo ranks behind him because he has fewer 2022 points—4.0 vs. 10.7.
Luzardo becomes the sixth player this season with 10 or more Box-Toppers points. It is his first season with 10 points in his fourth season earning Box-Toppers points. His previous best season was 2021 with the Marlins when he had 7.4 points, 39th among NL pitchers. In 2022, he had 4.0 points.
Streak
Starling Marte of the Mets has now earned Box-Toppers points in 12 straight seasons after earning his first Player of the Game honor of 2023 Tuesday.
Marte (HR 2-3 R 3BI in the 8-5 win over the Diamondbacks) earned his first Player of the Game honor in 2012 with the Pirates and has 27.0 career Box-Toppers points, 19th among active NL outfielders. His best season was 2015 with the Pirates, when he had 5.0 Box-Toppers points, 16th among NL outfielders. In 2022, he had 1.5 Box-Toppers points with the Mets.
Debut
Nick Gonzales of the Pirates made his Box-Toppers debut Tuesday with his first career Player of the Game honor.
Gonzales (2-2B 3-4 2R 2BI in the 9-7 win over the Dodgers) made his Major League debut June 23 and was playing in his 11th career game.
