Mountcastle earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 5.0 for the season, 60th among all players and fourth among American League batters.

Mountcastle is just the second batter to win Player of the Day honors in 2024 and his +4.0 Box-Toppers game score Thursday is the second-lowest Box-Toppers game score of all 87 Player of the Day winners this season.

The other batter to win Player of the Day this season is Jake Cronenworth of the Padres, who was Player of the Day March 21 in that day’s only game, the 15-11 win over the Dodgers in the opening series in South Korea. He had a +6.0 Box-Toppers game score, the third-lowest for a Player of the Day winner this season.

Mountcastle’s +4.0 game score is second-lowest of the season for a Player of the Day winner. The only score lower was +2.0 by Dodgers closer Evan Phillips, who was Player of the Day March 20 in the day’s only game, the season opening, 5-2 win against the Padres in South Korea.

In 2023, 12 batters won Player of the Day honors in the season’s 183 days. The lowest Box-Toppers game score for a Player of the Day winner in 2023 was +4.2 by Marlins pitcher Jesus Luzardo on March 31 (on a day in which five games were played). The lowest game score for a batter winning Player of the Day honors in 2023 was +5.0 by Willson Contreras of the Cardinals on May 18 (on a day in which six games were played).

Mountcastle was aided in his Player of the Day win Thursday by the relative low number of games completed—just nine, rather than a full slate of 15 games. In 2023, batters won Player of the Day honors eight times when a full slate of 15 or 16 games were played; the other four times, 10 or fewer games were played.

By this date last season, June 21, batters had won Player of the Day honors seven times and would go on to win five more times in the remainder of the season.

National League Player of the Day is Brendan Donovan of the Cardinals.

Brendan Donovan of the Cardinals homered, doubled and went 3-for-4, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 6-5 win over the Giants.

Donovan earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 4.2 for the season, 81st among all players and ninth among NL batters.

AL & NL Batters of the Day

There are no separate AL and NL Batters of the Day for Thursday because the overall Player of the Day is AL batter Ryan Mountcastle and the NL Player of the Day is batter Brendan Donovan.

Thursday was an upside-down day for Box-Toppers. Normally, pitchers win the majority of Player of the Game honors and have the highest game scores of all Player of the Game winners. But Thursday, batters won six of nine Player of the Game honors and had the five highest game scores among all Player of the Game winners.

Scoring

  • Mountcastle earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.

  • Donovan earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day.

  • All of Thursday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
