Reds’ Montas tops players for Tuesday, June 4; Yankees’ Gil increases 2024 points lead

Reds pitcher Frankie Montas is Tuesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.

Also Tuesday, Yankees pitcher Luis Gil increases his lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning American League Player of the Day honors. Plus, two other players rise in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after both earn Player of the Game honors—Mariners pitcher George Kirby rises to eight place and Braves pitcher Max Fried rises to 10th.

Player of the Day

Montas struck out nine over seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks, in the 4-1 win over the Rockies.

Montas allowed no hits through the first six innings before giving up a double to Elias Diaz to open the seventh inning.

Montas earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 3.0 for the season, 117th among all players and 44th among National League pitchers.

American League Player of the Day is Yankees pitcher Luis Gil.

American League Player of the Day

Yankees pitcher Luis Gil struck out six over six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and three walks, in the 5-1 win over the Twins.

Gil earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 13.4 for the season, increasing his lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings, ahead of second-place player, Braves pitcher Chris Sale (9.7 points). Gil leads over second-place AL pitcher Tanner Houck of the Red Sox (8.7).

American League Batter of the Day is Brandon Lowe of the Rays.

Brandon Lowe of the Rays hit a three-run homer, doubled and went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in five runs, in the 9-5 win over the Marlins.

National League Batter of the Day is Ian Happ of the Cubs.

Two players rise in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after both earned Player of the Game honors Tuesday:

  • Mariners pitcher George Kirby (5IP 6H 2R BB 9K W in the 4-3 win over the Athletics) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 7.7 for the season, rising to eighth place overall and fourth among AL pitchers.

  • Braves pitcher Max Fried (7IP 4H 3R 2ER BB 13K W in the 8-3 win over the Red Sox) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 7.7 for the season, rising to 10th place overall and sixth among NL pitchers.

Debut

Jeremy Pena of the Astros makes his regular season Box-Toppers debut Tuesday with his first career Player of the Game honor.

Pena (2B SF 2-2 R 2BI in the 8-5 win over the Cardinals) made his Major League debut April 7, 2022, and was playing in his 347th career game.

Though Pena is in his third season as a regular starter for the Astros, he did not win any Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors until Tuesday.

However, Pena did earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors once in the postseason: On Oct. 23, 2022, in the AL Championship Series Game 4 win over the Yankees (HR 2-4 2R 3BI). Pena was also named 2022 World Series Most Valuable Player. Though Pena did not win Player of the Game honors in any of the four Astros wins over the Phillies in that series, he had the highest Box-Toppers game score among Astros batters in their Game 5 win.
