Giants pitcher Logan Webb is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Also Wednesday, Padres pitcher Dylan Cease increases his lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors.
Player of the Day
Webb pitched a complete-game, five-hit shutout, striking out six and allowing one walk, in the 1-0 win over the Athletics.
Webb earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 7.0 for the season, 52nd among all players and 22nd among National League pitchers.
American League Player of the Day
DJ LeMahieu of the Yankees hit a grand slam, doubled and went 2-for-4, scoring once and driving in six runs, in the 6-5 win over the Phillies.
LeMahieu earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and is 72nd among AL batters.
This is LeMahieu’s first Player of the Game honor in nearly four years. He last earned Player of the Game honors Sept. 26, 2020, a season in which he had 3.5 Box-Toppers points, 13th among AL batters.
LeMahieu earned no points in 2021, 2022 or 2023, despite playing regularly over that time. He appeared in 150 games in 2021, 125 in 2022 and 136 in 2023. Wednesday was his 48th game of 2024.
National League Batter of the Day
Ian Happ of the Cubs doubled and went 3-for-4, scoring three times and driving in two runs, in the 13-4 win over the Reds.
Happ earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day, giving him 6.5 for the season, fifth among NL batters.
American League Batter of the Day
There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Wednesday because the overall AL Player of the Day is batter DJ LeMahieu.

Rankings
Padres pitcher Dylan Cease increased his lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.
Cease (5.2IP 3H R 3BB 6K W in the 8-1 win over the Dodgers) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 17.4 for the season. He leads over second-place player, Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal (14.4 points) and leads NL pitchers ahead of second-place Zack Wheeler of the Phillies (13.7 points).
Cease took the overall lead on July 20 and is now 3.0 points ahead of the nearest player in rankings, meaning it would take any starting pitcher at least two starts to catch up to his current point total, practically guaranteeing his lead for the next 10 to 14 days.
Notable
Tommy Pham of the Cardinals earns Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the second straight day Wednesday, both in his first two games after returning to his original team.
Pham (2B 3-4 2R 2BI in the 10-1 win over the Rangers) was also NL Batter of the Day in Tuesday’s 8-1 win over the Rangers (GS 1-2 R 4BI).
Pham began his Major League career with the Cardinals, playing there from 2014 to 2018. Pham was traded from the White Sox to the Cardinals on Monday.

About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
