10 | Shane Baz | pi sp | Rays | 4.0 |
Other Player of the Game winners Monday include Orioles pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano, Ryan Jeffers of the Twins and Gavin Lux of the Reds.
Player of the Day
Nimmo hit two home runs—a grand slam and a three-run homer—in the 19-5 win over the Nationals. Nimmo also doubled and went 4-for-6, scoring four times and driving in nine runs.
Nimmo earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and is 83rd in season player rankings, 13th among National League batters.
Nimmo recorded a +11.0 Box-Toppers game score Monday, the highest by a batter winning Player of the Game honors this season. Previously, the high was +10.0 by Aaron Judge of the Yankees on March 29 (3HR 2B 4-6 4R 8BI in the 20-9 win over the Brewers).
Nimmo and Judge are the only batters to win overall Player of the Day honors this season. In the other 33 days of the season, pitchers have won Player of the Day honors. In 2024, only five batters won Player of the Day honors in the 185 days of the season, with pitchers winning in 180 days.
Nimmo’s +11.0 game score would have been second-best for Player-of-the-Game-winning batters in 2024, behind the +14.0 by Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers on Sept. 19 (3HR 2-2B 6-6 4R 10BI in the 20-4 win over the Marlins), which was the second-best game for a batter since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995, behind a +15.0 game score for Anthony Rendon of the Nationals on April 30, 2017, (3HR 2B 6-6 5R 10BI in the 23-5 win over the Mets).
Nimmo’s +11.0 game score is also higher than the +9.0 game score recorded by Eugenio Suárez of the Diamondbacks Saturday in his four-home run game (4HR 4-4 4 5BI). Suárez, however, did not win Player of the Game, despite the effort, because the Diamondbacks lost to the Braves, 8-7.
While Nimmo’s +11.0 game score is the highest by a batter in 2025, it is the 28th-highest by all Player of the Game winners this season. There are 27 pitching Player of the Game winners with higher game scores, led by the +16.2 by Diamondbacks Zac Gallen on April 2 (6.2IP 3H 0R 0BB 13K W in the 4-3 win over the Yankees).
American League Player of the Day
Tomoyuki Sugano of the Orioles struck out eight over five scoreless innings, allowing five hits and one walk, in the 4-3 win over the Yankees.
Sugano earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and is 41st among AL pitchers.
This is Sugano’s Box-Toppers debut, his first career Player of the Game honor. Sugano made his Major League debut March 30 and was playing in his sixth career game.
Though Sugano is a Major League rookie, he is 35 years old and played 16 seasons for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball league. He is a three-time winner of the Central League Most Valuable Player Award and a two-time winner of the Eiji Sawamura Award (for top pitcher).
American League Batter of the Day
Ryan Jeffers of the Twins doubled and went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 11-1 win over the Guardians.
National League Batter of the Day
There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Monday because the overall Player of the Day is NL batter Brandon Nimmo.
Notable
Gavin Lux of the Reds has the most 2025 Box-Toppers points among Monday’s Player of the Day winners.
Lux (2-2B 3-4 R BI in the 3-1 win over the Cardinals) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 2.5 for the season, 54th among all players and 10th among NL batters.
Scoring
Nimmo earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.
Sugano earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day.
Jeffers earns 1.5 points for being AL Batter of the Day.
All of Monday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
