Despite trade deadline team shake-up, Phillies hold Box-Toppers team ranking lead

The Philadelphia Phillies maintain the Box-Toppers team rankings lead for the 14th week, despite winning only one game in the past week and making only minimal moves at a trade deadline which shook up team rankings.

Among the changes this week: The New York Yankees rise past the Baltimore Orioles to regain the lead among American League teams and the Los Angeles Dodgers are the hottest team of the week, in part due to landing the top trade deadline acquisition, picking up pitcher Jack Flaherty (9.0 Box-Toppers points) from the Tigers.

Diamondbacks’ Kelly tops players for Thursday, Aug. 24; Rays’ Adam tops AL players

Diamondbacks pitcher Merrill Kelly is Thursday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.

Kelly struck out 12 over seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks, in the 3-2 win over the Reds. Kelly did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the Reds tied the game after he exited.

Rays, Rangers have most players on Box-Toppers’ top 100 midseason player list

The Tampa Bay Rays and the Texas Rangers have the most players among the top 100 in Box-Toppers’ 2023 player rankings at the All-Star break.

Both the Rays and Rangers have seven players on the top 100 list (which actually consists of 102 players because of a tie for 100th place). Both American League teams are also among the top three in Box-Toppers team rankings at the All-Star break—the Rays rank first and the Rangers rank third, second among AL teams.

Cardinals’ Montgomery tops players for Friday, June 9; Ohtani maintains 2nd place

Cardinals pitcher Jordan Montgomery is Friday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.

Also Friday, Shohei Ohtani of the Angels becomes the second player this season to reach 10.0 Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors as a batter. He maintains second place in Box-Toppers season player rankings.

Diamondbacks’ Kelly tops players for Sunday, May 28; Rays’ Adam tops AL players

Diamondbacks pitcher Merrill Kelly is Sunday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.

Kelly struck out 10 over 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run, four hits and two walks, in the 4-2 win over the Red Sox.

Mets’ deGrom tops players for Friday, Sept. 20, rises to 6th place; Bieber, Morton maintain top 10 spots

Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom is Friday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day and rises to sixth place in season player rankings.

Also Friday, two players in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 earned Player of the Game honors—Indians pitcher Shane Bieber (ranked fourth) and Rays pitcher Charlie Morton (ranked fifth).

Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
