The top AL batter for the second straight week is Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers with 4.7 Box-Toppers points. He ranks fourth among all players.
The top NL batter for the fourth straight week is Giancarlo Stanton of the Marlins with 4.5 Box-Toppers points. He ranks eighth among all players.
Alex Rodriguez of the Yankees made a big and perhaps the most surprising rise up Box-Toppers player rankings this week. He earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points over the past week and with 4.5 points, now ranks second among all AL batters this season and ninth among all players. In a season after he was suspended for a year, in which realistically little was expected of an aging hitter who had not performed well since 2010, Rodriguez has far exceeded lowered expectations. And in the two games in which A-Rod earned Player of the Game this past week, he achieved milestones—on May 1, he tied Willie Mays’ home run mark of 660 and on May 7, he passed Mays, hitting home run 661, putting him in fourth place on the all-time home run list.
So far this season, 299 different players have earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors. Fifty-six players have more than 2.0 Box-Toppers points.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
