Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta leads players in Box-Toppers points this season—for now.
Arrieta and Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw have traded the lead in Box-Toppers player rankings six times since Sept. 2—and Kershaw, who starts Saturday, would take the lead again if he earns Player of the Game honors.

Kershaw led last week’s player rankings report because he led from Sept. 8 to Sept. 10, the date of the last report. Arrieta took over on Sept. 11.
So in addition to Arrieta, there are new leaders in two other main categories in Box-Toppers player rankings this week—Blue Jays pitcher David Price now leads American League pitchers and Prince Fielder of the Rangers now leads American League batters.
Overall leader—Arrieta leads all players and all National League pitchers with 23.1 Box-Toppers points. He took the lead for the third time this season (and third time this month) on Wednesday, passing Kershaw (22.7). Kershaw has also led three times this season and three times this month.
American League pitcher—Blue Jays pitcher David Price, with 20.1 Box-Toppers points, takes the AL pitching lead from previous leader Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez (19.4). Price took the lead on Wednesday. Price ranks fourth among all players.

American League batter—Prince Fielder of the Rangers (11.5 Box-Toppers points) rose on Wednesday to lead AL batters, passing Edwin Encarnacion of the Blue Jays (10.4, now third among AL batters). Fielder ranks 26th among all players.
National League batter—Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies (11.5 Box-Toppers points) maintains his lead among NL batters. He ranks 25th among all players.
The lowest Box-Toppers point total to lead a category at the end of a season is 11.6, set in 2014 by Troy Tulowitzki of the Rockies, who led NL batters. With a little more than two weeks left in the season, there is a chance the AL and NL batting leaders would have fewer than 11.6 points. The lowest Box-Toppers point total to lead AL batters is 12.5 in 2008 by Aubrey Huff of the Orioles. (Box-Toppers record keeping began in 1995.)
So far this season 722 different players have earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors. There are 360 players with more than 2.0 Box-Toppers points.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
