Also Sunday, Mariners pitcher James Paxton rises to sixth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning American League Player of the Day honors.

Player of the Day—Castillo allowed one run over eight innings, striking out six and giving up three hits and one walk, in the 6-4 win over the Marlins.

American League Player of the Day—Mariners pitchers James Paxton struck out eight over six scoreless innings, allowing six hits and no walks, in the 9-1 win over the Mets.

Paxton earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 12.7 for the season and rising from ninth to sixth place in season player rankings, second among AL pitchers, behind Chris Sale of the Red Sox (17.1).

Paxton had a Box-Toppers game score Sunday of +8.0, same as Castillo. But Castillo won Player of the Day over Paxton because he had more innings pitched (8 vs. 6).

American League Batter of the Day—Justin Upton of the Tigers hit a grand slam, doubled and went 4-for-5, scoring twice and driving in six runs, in the 13-1 win over the Astros.

National League Batter of the Day—Andrew McCutchen of the Pirates hit three home runs and went 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 7-1 win over the Padres.

Notable—Cubs pitcher John Lackey now has 125.2 career Box-Toppers points, 38th-most among all players since 1995 (when Box-Toppers tracking began) after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday.

Lackey (6IP 5H 2R 2BB 7K W in the 4-2 win over the Brewers) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, to give him 125.2 for his career, beginning in 2002. Lackey now trails 37th-ranked player on the “all-time” list Mariano Rivera (126.4). Lackey has 4.0 Box-Toppers points on the season; he had 13.4 in 2016.

Beltre—Adrian Beltre of the Rangers became the 31st player in Major League history with 3,000 career hits Sunday.

Beltre doubled and went 1-for-5, scoring twice as the Rangers lost to the Orioles, 10-6. Beltre did not earn Player of the Game honors because his team lost. He had a Box-Toppers game score Sunday of -2.0. Player of the Game was Orioles catcher Wellington Castillo.

Beltre has 113.8 career Box-Toppers points, 49th-most among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He ranks 15th among all batters since 1995 and third among active batters, behind Albert Pujols of the Angels (185.3) and Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers (146.9).

Beltre made his Box-Toppers and Major League debut in 1998 and has earned Box-Toppers points in each season except for two—2005 and 2014. Beltre has 2.5 points in 2017.

Scoring—Castillo earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Paxton earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Upton and McCutchen each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Sunday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
