About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Corbin struck out 12 over seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks, in the 2-1, 13-inning win over the Pirates. Corbin picked up a no-decision and did not earn the win because the game was in a scoreless tie when he exited.

Corbin earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 11.0 for the season, rising from ninth to fifth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings. He is now second among National League pitchers, behind overall leader Max Scherzer of the Nationals (16.4 points).

Corbin becomes the eighth player this season with 10 or more Box-Toppers points. It is his second season with 10 or more points. He previously did it in 2013 with the Diamondbacks, when he had 17.4 points, sixth among all players.

American League Player of the Day—Indians pitcher Shane Bieber struck out nine over seven scoreless innings, allowing four hits and one walk, in the 10-0 win over the Tigers.

This was Bieber’s Box-Toppers debut, the first time in his career he earned Player of the Game honors. Bieber made his Major League debut May 31 and was playing in his third career game. He is the 4,005th player to debut in Box-Toppers since record keeping began in 1995.

American League Batter of the Day—J.D. Martinez of the Red Sox homered, hit two doubles and went 4-for-5, scoring three times and driving in five runs, in the 14-10 win over the Mariners.

While Martinez had a Red Sox-best Box-Toppers game score Friday of +7.0, Mariners batter Nelson Cruz had a Box-Toppers game score of +8.0 in the losing effort (2HR 4-5 2R 7BI). However, Cruz earns no Box-Toppers points since the Mariners lost.

National League Batter of the Day—Odubel Herrera of the Phillies homered and went 4-for-5, scoring four times and driving in two runs, in the 12-2 win over the Nationals.

Notable—Eugenio Suarez of the Reds extended his lead among NL batters in 2018 Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.

Suarez (HR 3-4 R 2BI in the 6-3 win over the Reds) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 7.5 for the season. He leads second-place NL batter Freddie Freeman of the Braves (6.5). Suarez is now 19th in season player rankings.

Scoring—Corbin earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Bieber earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Martinez and Herrera each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Friday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
