About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Also Sunday, Brewers closing pitcher Josh Hader rises to lead Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors.
Player of the Day—Teheran struck out four over six scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks, in the 3-1, 10-inning win over the Marlins.
Teheran did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the Marlins tied the game after he exited.
Teheran earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and ranks 78th among all players, 24th among National League pitchers.
American League Player of the Day—Mariners pitcher Erik Swanson struck out three over six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and three walks, in the 10-0 win over the Indians.
This was Swanson’s Box-Toppers debut, the first time in his career he earned Player of the Game honors. Swanson made his Major League debut April 11 and was playing in his fifth career game.
National League Batter of the Day—Hunter Renfroe of the Padres hit a walk-off, pinch-hit grand slam in the 8-5 win over the Dodgers.
American League Batter of the Day—Asdrubal Cabrera of the Rangers hit a three-run homer and doubled in the 10-2 win over the Blue Jays. Cabrera went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in four runs.
New leader—Brewers closing pitcher Josh Hader rises to take the lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday.
Hader (1IP 0H 0R 0BB 3K Sv in the 3-2 win over the Mets) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 7.0 for the season, rising from fifth to first in player rankings, passing Rays pitcher Tyler Glasnow (6.7 points), who took the lead Friday.
Hader also takes the lead among NL pitchers, moving ahead of Zack Greinke of the Diamondbacks (6.2).
The last time a closing pitcher led in Box-Toppers season player rankings at any point in the season was June 17 and 18, 2003, when Dodgers closer Eric Gagne led all players for the season with 11.0 Box-Toppers points. Gagne finished that 2003 season with 19.0 Box-Toppers points, fifth among all players and fourth among NL pitchers. Gagne holds the distinction of being the only non-starter to lead a league’s pitchers in season Box-Toppers points (player tracking began in 1995). He did it in 2004, when he led NL pitchers with 19.7 points, which was third among all players. (Gagne later admitted to use of performing enhancing drugs.)
Hader has already earned Player of the Game honors seven times this season. In 2018, he led NL closers with 11.7 Box-Toppers points, earning Player of the Game honors 11 times.
Notable—Alex Bregman of the Astros earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the second straight day Sunday.
Bregman (GS 2-5 R 4BI in the 10-4 win over the Angels) was also Player of the Game Saturday (2HR 3-5 3R 4BI in the 14-2 win over the Angels). Bregman has 2.0 Box-Toppers points on the season, both earned Saturday and Sunday.
Scoring—Teheran earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Swanson earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Renfroe and Cabrera each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Sunday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
