Player of the Day—Matz pitched a complete-game, five-hit shutout, striking out seven and walking none, in the 3-0 win over the Pirates.
Matz earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 7.0 for the season, 40th among all players and 18th among National League pitchers.
American League Player of the Day—Mariners pitcher Marco Gonzales struck out eight over seven innings, allowing one run, six hits and no walks, in the 8-1 win over the Tigers.
National League Batter of the Day—Will Smith of the Dodgers homered, doubled and went 3-for-3, scoring once and driving in six runs, in the 9-3 win over the Nationals.
American League Batter of the Day—Pedro Severino of the Orioles homered and went 4-for-5, scoring once and driving in four runs, in the 8-7 win over the Angels.
This was Severino’s Box-Toppers debut, the first time in his career he earned Player of the Game honors. Severino made his Major League debut Sept. 20, 2015, and was playing in his 166th career game.

Cole (7IP 4H R 3BB 7K W in the 8-2 win over the Cardinals) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 17.1 for the season, rising from second to first place. He passes teammate Justin Verlander (16.8), who led from May 10 until Cole passed him Monday, July 22, holding the lead for two days before Verlander regained the lead Wednesday, July 24. Verlander then held the lead for three days before Cole regained it Saturday.
Cole also leads AL pitchers ahead of Verlander.
