About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Also Sunday, Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg becomes the first new leader in Box-Toppers points among National League pitchers in more than three months after earning Player of the Game honors. Strasburg also rises to third place in overall Box-Toppers season player rankings.
Player of the Day—Lopez pitched five hitless and scoreless innings, striking out six and walking two, in the 2-0 win over the Rangers.
Lopez exited with dehydration and flu-like symptoms and five White Sox pitchers combined on a one-hitter, with the single hit happening in the sixth inning.
Lopez earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 9.7 for the season, 37th among all players and 14th among American League pitchers.
National League Player of the Day—Braves pitcher Dallas Keuchel struck out seven over seven scoreless innings, allowing four hits and three walks, in the 2-1 win over the Mets.
American League Batter of the Day—Anthony Santander of the Orioles homered and went 5-for-5, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 8-3 win over the Rays.
National League Batter of the Day—Kevin Newman of the Pirates doubled and went 4-for-4, scoring three times and driving in one run, in the 9-8 win over the Reds.
This was Newman’s Box-Toppers debut, the first time in his career he earned Player of the Game honors. Newman made his Major League debut Aug. 16, 2018, and was playing in his 132nd career game.
Rankings—Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg rises to lead NL pitchers in 2019 Box-Toppers points and also rises to third place overall after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday.
Strasburg (6IP 5H 2R BB 10K ND in the 7-5, 11-inning win over the Cubs) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 16.7 for the season, rising from sixth to third place in season player rankings, trailing only Astros pitchers Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole (both with 20.8 points).
Strasburg rises past Josh Hader of the Brewers (15.7 points) to lead NL pitchers in player rankings. Hader has led NL pitchers in 2019 points for more than three months, taking the lead May 5, when he took the lead among all players with 7.0 points. However, Hader has earned no points since July 24.
Strasburg’s movement from sixth to third place in overall standings is the first change in top 10 player rankings since Aug. 11, when Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu rose from eighth to seventh place with 15.4 points. Few top 10 players have earned Box-Toppers points in the past two weeks and when they have, it didn’t change their ranking position.
Strasburg also now has 128.8 career Box-Toppers points, rising to 35th place among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. With his 1.0 point Sunday, he passes Vladimir Guerrero (128.3) on the “all-time” list and now trails 34th-ranked player Trevor Hoffman (129.4). Strasburg ranks 13th among active players in career points.
Debut—Mike Ford of the Yankees made his Box-Toppers debut Sunday with his first career Player of the Game honor.
Ford (HR 2B 2-3 R 2BI in the 5-1 win over the Dodgers) made his Major League debut April 18 and was playing in his 31st career game.
Scoring—Lopez earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Keuchel earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Santander and Newman each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Sunday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
