Rankings—Luke Voit of the Yankees rises to 10th place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Tuesday.

Voit (HR 1-3 R 3BI in the 9-6 win over the Braves) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 3.5 for the season. He ranks third among AL batters, behind teammate Aaron Judge (4.0) and Max Kepler of the Twins (3.5). Voit ranks behind Kepler because he had fewer 2019 Box-Toppers points (5.5 vs. 6.7).

Streak—Hunter Pence of the Giants has now earned Box-Toppers points in 14 straight seasons after earning his first Player of the Game honor of 2020 Tuesday.

Pence (HR 2-2 R 3BI in the 7-6, 10-inning win over the Astros) earned his first points in 2007 with the Astros and has 64.2 career points, eighth among active NL batters. His best season was 2008 with the Astros when he had 8.2 Box-Toppers points, seventh among NL outfielders. In 2019, he had 5.5 points with the Rangers.

Pence becomes the 12th player with a currently active streak of earning Box-Toppers points in 14 or more consecutive seasons (see chart elsewhere on this page Active season streaks). He also is the second player in two days to extend such a streak to 14 seasonsAsdrubal Cabrera of the Nationals did it Monday.

Notable—Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer now has 199.2 career Box-Toppers points—eighth-most since 1995—after earning Player of the Game honors Tuesday.

Scherzer (6IP 6H R 2BB 7K W in the 2-1 win over the Mets) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 2.0 for the season, 11th among NL pitchers. On Box-Toppers “all-time” career points list, he trails seventh-place Albert Pujols of the Angels (201.8). Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. Scherzer ranks fifth among active players in career points.

Also notable—Manny Machado earns his first Box-Toppers point in nearly two years Tuesday, his first as a member of the San Diego Padres.

Machado was Player of the Game in the 6-2 win over the Dodgers (GS 2-4 R 4BI). Despite the hype and his big contract going into the 2019 season and despite playing in 156 games in 2019, Machado did not earn Player of the Game honors once during the season. The last time he earned Player of the Game honors was Sept. 13, 2018, with the Dodgers. In fact, that was the only time he earned Player of the Game honors with the Dodgers after the mid-season trade from the Orioles. He earned Player of the Game honors 27 times with the Baltimore Orioles from 2012 to 2018 and has 37.4 career points.

Scoring—Bundy earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Heyward earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Solak earns 1.5 points for being AL Batter of the Day. All of Tuesday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
