About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Active players are shown on the team with whom they finished the 2019 season.
Mike Piazza leads catchers in career Box-Toppers points since 1995; Brian McCann led active catchers in career points
Mike Piazza has the most Box-Toppers points of any catcher since tracking began in 1995.
Piazza, who played from 1992 to 2007 primarily for the Mets and Dodgers, but also for the Padres, Athletics and Marlins, earned 95.7 Box-Toppers points from 1995 to the end of his career. That is 13.1 more points than the second-place catcher since 1995, Joe Mauer (82.6).
The chart above shows the top five catchers over several time frames—over the past season (2019), the past two seasons (2018-19), the past six seasons (2014-19) and “all-time”—the past 25 seasons (since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began). For the most recent seasons, the top five catchers in each league are shown. For the “all-time” rankings, the top five overall catchers (including retired players) are shown at left and the top five active catchers in career Box-Toppers points are shown at right.
At the end of 2019, Piazza’s 95.7 Box-Toppers points ranked 91st among all players since 1995 and 34th among all batters. Piazza was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2016.
Piazza’s lead among catchers would likely be larger if his entire career from 1992 were tracked. Rough projections put his overall career Box-Toppers point total at about 111.
All five top catchers in career Box-Toppers points since 1995 are retired. The highest-ranking active catcher after 2019 is Brian McCann, who played for the Braves in 2019, with 65.9 Box-Toppers points. That is 9.9 points ahead of the second-place active catcher, Russell Martin of the Dodgers (56.0 Box-Toppers points).
McCann also ranks fifth among National League catchers over the past season (3.5 points in 2019) and third among NL catchers over the past six seasons (23.7 from 2014-19).
Mitch Garver of the Twins had the most Box-Toppers points of any catcher in 2019 with 7.5. Garver also leads all catchers in Box-Toppers points over the past two seasons (15.0 over 2018-19).
J.T. Realmuto of the Phillies led NL catchers in 2019 with 7.0 Box-Toppers points. He also led NL catchers over the past two seasons (12.5 from 2018-19) and ranked second among NL catchers over the past six seasons (27.0 from 2014-19).
Buster Posey of the Giants had the most Box-Toppers points of any catcher over the past six seasons (32.0 from 2014-19). He also appears in four top-five catcher lists here, the most of any player. He also ranks second among NL catchers in the past season (5.0 in 2019), fourth among NL catchers over the past two seasons (6.5 from 2018-19) and third among active catchers in career points (49.0). (Posey is voluntarily sitting out the 2020 season due to coronavirus precautions.)
Salvador Perez of the Royals had the most Box-Toppers points of any AL catcher over the past six seasons (23.7 from 2014-19), despite earning no points in 2019 as he missed the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Of the five who lead active catchers in career Box-Toppers points, all of them earned Box-Toppers points during the 2019 season:
McCann ranked fifth among NL catchers with 3.5 points.
Martin (second with 56.0 career points) earned 1.0 point in 2019.
Posey (third with 49.0 career points) ranked second among NL catchers with 5.0 points in 2019.
Yadier Molina of the Cardinals (fourth with 46.7 career points) earned 3.0 points in 2019.
Kurt Suzuki of the Nationals (fifth with 44.0 career points) ranked third among NL catchers with 4.5 points in 2019.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
