About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom maintains his lead in Box-Toppers player rankings, despite not playing in more than three weeks.
Top 10 players
Here are the top 10 in Box-Toppers season player rankings for 2021. Players are ranked by Box-Toppers points (BTP) earned this season through Friday, July 30. (NOTE: This top 10 list includes the results of Friday’s games, while the graphic and chart above were tabulated prior to Friday’s games. As a result, Chris Bassitt appears in this top 10, having displaced Shohei Ohtani, who ranked 10th prior to Friday’s games.)Player | Pos | Team | BTP | |

About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Meanwhile, Shohei Ohtani of the Angels rises to lead American League batters in this week’s report, while the two other category leaders remain the same:
Gerrit Cole of the Yankees leads AL pitchers.
Nick Castellanos of the Reds leads National League batters.
deGrom has 16.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points since last week’s player rankings, to maintain his lead ahead of second-place player Cole (16.4). It is the fifth straight player rankings report deGrom has led, dating back to June 24. deGrom also leads NL pitchers for the fifth straight time, ahead of second-place Zack Wheeler of the Phillies (15.1). deGrom last appeared in a game July 7 (earning Player of the Day honors), has been on the injured list and reports indicate he will not pitch again until September.
A note: Box-Toppers usually posts player rankings reports on Fridays, but delayed this week’s since the trade deadline also fell on Friday this year. Rather than making a report while team and player positions were in flux, we waited until after the deadline Friday afternoon to tabulate the top 10 lists. However, the tabulations shown here were made prior to Friday’s slate of evening games, so some slight changes have taken place in the meantime. However, all four category leaders shown in the chart above and mentioned in this story remain the same.
And despite the rampant player movement late this week prior to the trade deadline, only one player among the four top 10 lists shown above was traded in the past week—Max Scherzer, seventh among NL pitchers with 10.7 Box-Toppers points, was traded from the Nationals to the Dodgers.
American League batters—Shohei Ohtani of the Angels rises to the lead with 11.4 Box-Toppers points, passing previous leader J.D. Martinez of the Red Sox (9.7), who falls to second place.
Prior to the games of Friday, July 30, Ohtani ranked 10th in Box-Toppers season player rankings, the only batter among the overall top 10. However, Ohtani was displaced from the top 10 after Friday’s games, falling to 11th, when Athletics pitcher Chris Bassitt earned Player of the Day honors and jumped to eighth place with 11.7 points.
Ohtani has earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game eight times in 2021, three as a designated hitter and the other five as a starting pitcher. Uniquely, Ohtani qualifies in Box-Toppers rankings among both batters and pitchers.
American League pitchers—Cole leads the category for the fifth straight report with 16.4 points, picking up no points in the past week. He ranks ahead of second-place Tyler Glasnow of the Rays (12.7). Cole ranks second overall.
National League batters—Castellanos leads for the fourth straight report with 8.0 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week, ahead of second-place NL batter Fernando Tatis Jr. of the Padres (7.5 points).
Castellanos ranks 35th among all players in 2021 Box-Toppers points.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
