Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler is Sunday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day and rises to first place in Box-Toppers season player rankings, passing previous leader Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom.
Also Sunday, Adam Duvall of the Braves rises to lead National League batters in 2021 Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors.
Player of the Day—Wheeler pitched a complete-game, two-hit shutout, striking out 11 and walking one, in the 3-0 win over the Mets.
Wheeler earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 17.1 for the season, rising from fourth to first place in season player rankings, passing deGrom (16.7), who had led rankings since June 21. deGrom has not pitched since July 7 due to injury and reports indicate the earliest he could return is September, if he is able to return at all this season.
Wheeler also assumes the lead among National League pitchers ahead of deGrom.
American League Player of the Day—Eloy Jimenez of the White Sox hit two home runs, doubled and went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in five runs, in the 9-3 win over the Cubs.
National League Batter of the Day—C.J. Cron of the Rockies hit two home runs—a grand slam and a three-run shot—in the 13-8 win over the Marlins. Cron went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in seven runs.
American League Batter of the Day—There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Sunday because the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Eloy Jimenez.
Rankings—Adam Duvall of the Braves rises to first place among NL batters in 2021 Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday.
Duvall (HR 2-3 R 2BI in the 5-4 win over the Nationals) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 8.0 for the season, passing previous leader Nick Castellanos of the Reds (8.0). Though both Duvall and Castellanos have 8.0 points for the season, Duvall ranks ahead because he has more 2020 Box-Toppers points—4.0 vs. 1.0.
This is the first time Duvall has earned Player of the Game honors since being traded from the Marlins. He ranks 36th in overall Box-Toppers player rankings.
Notable—Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler becomes the 18th player this season to reach 10 Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday.
Buehler (6IP 4H R 4BB 8K W in the 8-2 win over the Angels) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 10.7 for the season, 16th among all players and 10th among NL pitchers.
This is Buehler’s third season with 10 or more points. His best season was 2019 with the Dodgers when he had 16.4, seventh among NL pitchers. In 2018, he had 15.1 points, fifth among NL pitchers.
