Blue Jays pitcher Yusei Kikuchi is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Thursday’s spring training games.
Kikuchi struck out nine over five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk, in the 3-0 win over the Twins.
Kikuchi would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.
Kikuchi earned 5.7 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 51st among American League pitchers.
National League Player of the Day—Phillies pitcher Bailey Falter struck out five over five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks, in the 4-1 win over the Tigers.
Falter would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game.
Falter earned 4.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 79th among NL pitchers.
American League Batter of the Day—Julio Rodriguez of the Mariners homered and hit two doubles, going 3-for-3, scoring three times and driving in three runs, in the 17-6 win over the Reds.
Rodriguez earned 7.5 Box-Toppers points in 2022, eighth among AL batters and most among Thursday’s spring training Player of the Game winners.
National League Batter of the Day—Evan Longoria of the Diamondbacks doubled and went 2-for-2, scoring twice and driving in one run, in the 11-5 win over the Dodgers.
Longoria earned 4.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022 with the Giants, 41st among NL batters. Longoria has 60.0 career Box-Toppers points, which is eighth among active NL batters and most among Thursday’s spring training Player of the Game winners.
Notable—In Thursday’s 15 spring training games, four ended in a tie in which no Player of the Game honor was awarded (see chart below for game details). In the remaining 11, seven who earned Player of the Game honors have earned Box-Toppers points in the past (see those players here); the remaining four players have yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in a regular season game.
Scoring—No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Kikuchi would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Falter would have earned 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Rodriguez and Longoria would have each earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Thursday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
