▪️ A B-T look at upcoming pitching matchups.
Vinny Capra of the Blue Jays is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Saturday’s spring training games.
Capra hit a three-run homer, doubled and went 2-for-4, scoring three times and driving in seven runs, in the 18-5 win over the Tigers.
Capra would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.
Capra made his Major League debut May 1, 2022, and has played in eight career games, but has yet to earn his first career Player of the Game honor and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.
National League Player of the Day—Jordan Walker of the Cardinals hit two home runs, doubled and went 4-for-4, scoring three times and driving in three runs, in the 9-6 win over the Nationals.
Walker has yet to make his regular season Major League debut and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.
AL and NL Batters of the Day—There are no separate AL and NL Batters of the Day for Monday because the overall Player of the Day is AL batter Vinny Capra and the NL Player of the Day is batter Jordan Walker.
Notable—Braves pitcher Max Fried has the most 2022 Box-Toppers points among Saturday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Game winners.
Fried (3IP H 0R 2BB 5K W in the 7-5 win over the Twins) earned 16.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, eighth among NL pitchers. This is his second Player of the Game honor of 2023’s spring training. He also did it Feb. 27.
In Saturday’s 18 games, two ended in ties, so no Player of the Game honors were awarded in those (see chart below for game details). In the remaining 16 games, nine who earned Player of the Game honors have earned Box-Toppers points in the past (see those players here); the remaining seven players have yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in a regular season game.
Scoring—No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Capra would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Walker would have earned 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. All of Saturday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
