Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom is Monday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day, rising to first place in season player rankings.
deGrom struck out five over four scoreless and hitless innings, allowing one walk, in the 4-0 win over the Royals. deGrom did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because he exited before pitching the required five innings to earn the win.
deGrom, whose innings have been limited by injury in recent seasons, left because of a sore right wrist. He expressed optimism he will make his next start.
deGrom earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 5.0 for the season, rising to first place in season player rankings, passing previous leader, Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole (4.0), who only took the lead Sunday.
deGrom now has 136.5 career Box-Toppers points, 35th among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He trails 34th-ranked player Andy Pettitte (138.5). deGrom ranks 11th among active players in career points, fourth among active American League pitchers.
National League Player of the Day—Cubs pitcher Hayden Wesneski struck out seven over seven innings, allowing one run, five hits and no walks, in the 10-1 win over the Athletics.
Wesneski earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and is 51st in season player rankings.
National League Batter of the Day—Kevin Newman of the Reds homered, doubled and went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 8-1 win over the Rays.
American League Batter of the Day—Corey Julks of the Astros homered, doubled and went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 9-2 win over the Blue Jays.
This was Julks’s Box-Toppers debut, the first time in his career he earned Player of the Game honors. Julks made his Major League debut March 31 and was playing in his 11th career game.

Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
