About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Player of the Day—Nola struck out six over eight innings, allowing one run, three hits and no walks, in the 3-1 win over the Astros.
Nola earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and is 54th among all players, 19th among National League pitchers.
American League Player of the Day—Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom struck out two over 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk, in the 5-2 win over the Yankees.
deGrom did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because he did not pitch the required five innings to earn the win. deGrom exited after 50 pitches with forearm tightness, the second time in three games he’s exited early with injury concerns. deGrom’s appearances have been limited over the past three seasons as he’s recovered from various injuries.
While deGrom’s Friday appearance was limited, he pitched the required three innings to qualify to be considered for Box-Toppers Player of the Game winner and his relatively meager +3.2 Box-Toppers game score was enough to beat not only his Rangers teammates, but to be the best among all five AL Player of the Game winners Friday.
deGrom earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 7.7 for the season, rising from fourth to first in season player rankings, passing previous leader, Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen (6.7 Box-Toppers points), who took the lead Wednesday and falls to second place. deGrom also takes the Box-Toppers points among AL pitchers, passing previous leader Gerrit Cole of the Yankees (6.0).
deGrom now has 139.2 career Box-Toppers points, rising to 33rd place among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. With his 1.7 points Friday, he passes two players on the “all-time” list—Andy Pettitte (138.5) and Madison Bumgarner (139.1). deGrom now trails 32nd-ranked player Jake Peavy (141.8). deGrom ranks 10th among active players in career points, fourth among active AL pitchers.
National League Batter of the Day—Nick Senzel of the Reds doubled and went 2-for-4, scoring three times and driving in three runs, in the 11-7 win over the Athletics.
American League Batter of the Day—Max Kepler of the Twins homered, hit a sacrifice fly and went 1-for-2, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 8-6 win over the Royals.
Rankings—Marlins pitcher Jesus Luzardo rises to eighth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.
Luzardo (6.1IP 5H 2R 2BB 6K ND in the 3-2 win over the Cubs) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 4.7 for the season, second among NL pitchers, behind Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks (6.7).
Debut—Will Brennan of the Guardians made his Box-Toppers debut Friday with his first career Player of the Game honor.
Brennan (HR 1-3 2R BI in the 5-2 win over the Red Sox) made his Major League debut Sept. 21, 2022, and was playing in his 33rd career game.
Scoring—Nola earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and deGrom earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Senzel and Kepler each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Friday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
