Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale is Sunday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Also Sunday, Twins pitcher Sonny Gray rises to fifth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors.
Player of the Day—Sale struck out five over 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run, three hits and no walks, in the 7-1 win over the Guardians.
Sale earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 3.0 for the season, 34th among all players and 15th among American League pitchers.
Sale also now has 147.6 career Box-Toppers points, 28th among all players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. With his 2.0 points Sunday, he passes two players on the “all-time” list—David Ortiz (145.9) and Jim Thome (146.7) and now trails 27th-ranked player Javier Vazquez (148.3). American League Batter of the Day—Josh Jung of the Rangers hit a grand slam, doubled and went 2-for-4, scoring three times and driving in five runs, in the 15-2 win over the Yankees.
National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Sunday because the overall NL Player of the Day is batter C.J. Cron.
Rankings—Twins pitcher Sonny Gray rises from seventh to fifth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday.

Debut—Brent Rooker of the Athletics made his Box-Toppers debut with his first career Player of the Game honor Sunday.
Rooker (HR SF 2-2 2R 2BI in the 5-4 win over the Reds) made his Major League debut Sept. 4, 2020, and was playing in his 103rd career game.
