Rodriguez earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 6.0 for the season, seventh among all players and fifth among AL pitchers.
Rodriguez had a Box-Toppers game score Wednesday of +9.0, same as Astros pitcher Cristian Javier, who was Player of the Game in the 5-4 win over the Angels (6IP 3H 2R BB 11K W). But Rodriguez ranked higher, winning overall Player of the Day, because he had more innings pitched—seven vs. six.
National League Player of the Day—Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw struck out eight over seven innings, allowing one run, five hits and no walks, in the 8-1 win over the Brewers.
Kershaw earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 6.1 for the season, fifth among all players and second among NL pitchers, behind Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks (7.7).

Zack Wheeler of the Phillies (7IP 3H R BB 7K ND in the 2-1, 10-inning win over the Blue Jays).
But Kershaw won tiebreakers over both of them to win NL Player of the Day honors. Kershaw ranked higher than Wheeler because he earned the win, while Wheeler picked up a no-decision, Kershaw ranked higher than Verlander because he had more strikeouts—eight vs. seven.
Kershaw now has 265.4 career Box-Toppers points, second among all players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995, behind Randy Johnson (282.5). (It should be noted Johnson would have more Box-Toppers points if his entire career from 1988 were tracked—projections put his point total at about 385.) Kershaw leads active players in career points, ahead of second-place player, Mets pitcher Max Scherzer (237.3).
American League Batter of the Day—Nick Pratto of the Royals homered and went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 9-1 win over the White Sox.

This is Verlander’s first Player of the Game honor of 2023 and his first as a member of the Mets. Verlander led all players in Box-Toppers points in 2022 with 26.0, when he was with the Astros. (He also led players in 2012 with the Tigers, when he had 24.8 Box-Toppers points.)

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
