Rankings—Shohei Ohtani of the Angels rises from third to first place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.
Ohtani (2HR 2-3 3R 4BI in the 12-5 win over the White Sox) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 9.4 for the season, passing previous leader, Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen (8.7), who only took the lead Tuesday. Ohtani also rises to first place among AL pitchers, passing Shane McClanahan of the Rays (8.7). He also extends his lead among AL batters, ahead of Aaron Judge of the Yankees (7.5).
This is Ohtani’s eighth Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor of 2023 and his third as a designated hitter. The other five have come as a starting pitcher. Ohtani qualifies to rank among both batters and pitchers because he has more than 25 percent of his Player of the Game honors at both positions. He now has 37.5 percent of his Player of the Game honors as a batter and 62.5 percent as a pitcher.
During the previous two seasons, there were periods in which Ohtani qualified to rank among both batters and pitchers, but he finished both 2021 and 2022 ranked solely among pitchers because he earned such an overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors as a pitcher. This, even though he played far more games at designated hitter than pitcher. In only his 2018 rookie season did Ohtani qualify to rank among both pitchers and batters, winning Player of the Game honors six total times—three as a pitcher and three as a designated hitter. He qualified only as a designated hitter in 2019, as he recovered from Tommy John surgery and did not pitch that season.
This is Ohtani’s second stint atop Box-Toppers season player rankings in 2023. He also led from May 21 until losing the lead on May 24.

McCutchen just edged teammate Connor Joe to win Player of the Game Wednesday. Both had identical Box-Toppers game scores (+2.0) and nearly identical linescores, but McCutchen held the tiebreaker because he had one walk while Joe had none.
Scoring—Kirby earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Henry earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Naylor and Ruiz each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Wednesday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
